The passenger traffic at Changi Airport of Singapore rose by 0.9 per cent last January while the share in passenger transportation of the airport’s main partner countries – Japan, India and Thailand – has risen by 11 per cent (Japan) and 9 per cent (both India and Thailand).

The National Fisheries Department of Myanmar has designated an additional stretch of the Irrawaddy River as a protected zone for dolphins. The added part of the river is 120kms long and flows between Sagaing and Shwegu in Kachin State.
A Cambodia Public Works Ministry director says a deadline of April has been set for the inauguration of a Phnom Penh Airport to downtown rail link. Railway director Chan Kimleng told reporters the project was on schedule and would see the first trains running in time for the auspicious Choul Chnam Thmey Festival (Khmer New Year).

A project to extend the only operational railway line in Laos as far as Vientiane has moved a step closer to reality. An official ceremony held recently confirmed the appointment of developers to oversee the construction of a 7.5km-long extension of the line from Thanaleng Station to the city.
Tomorrow is the first of February and the day a ban on smoking on some of Thailand’s most famous beaches comes into effect. The prohibition covers 24 beaches and includes the most popular ones at Phuket, Phang Nga and Hua Hin. The ban was first announced in the Royal Gazette three months ago.
Astronomers in Thailand say tomorrow’s lunar eclipse will be long and vivid. The National Institute of Astronomy says the début lunar eclipse for 2018 is due to start at 19:50, totally eclipse 40 minutes later and end at a little after 21:00.
Thai AirAsia is preparing to launch a new cross-country route linking two of Thailand’s biggest cities. The first flights between Chiang Mai and Udon Thani are scheduled for takeoff on the 15 February 2018.
The company which runs ferry services along the Saen Saeb Canal in Bangkok has increased fares slightly. The rise was effective yesterday and saw THB1 added to the price of all trips for passengers travelling between terminus piers at Panfa Leelard and Wat Sriboonreung.
The National Meteorological Department of Thailand says the forecast for much of Thailand this week is rain showers and cold spells. A weather update issued by the department yesterday stated scattered rain showers would follow on from last week’s unseasonal rainstorms.
A fire on an upper level of Khon Kaen Airport’s passenger terminal early this morning led to the cancellation of all flights. A travel advisory posted up on the airport’s website said the fire erupted in an electrical control room at around 05:00.
The US Department of State’s new travel advisory tables show most of Southeast Asia is considered safe. The department tweaked the tables earlier in January to provide travellers with easy-to-read advice on which countries are safe to visit and which are not.
