Things to Do in Koh Tao
Diving is of course one of the highlights of any trip to Koh Tao. With beautiful coral reefs, unique marine life and warm turquoise water it is one of the best locations for diving off the coast of Thailand.
However, if you’re not into diving there are still plenty of sights to explore while staying on this wonderful Thai island.
For culture vultures
For culture vultures, there are a couple of sights worth seeing while on Koh Tao. Firstly, the Rama V Stone is a large boulder located on the southern end of Sairee Beach which was engraved with the initials of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) when he visited in 1899. Although it is a very simple cultural site (nothing like the temples and shrines in Bangkok or Chiang Mai) you will find some incense and offerings placed around the stone and can read about the King’s visit in guidebooks and blogs online.
If you’re into art you should also venture to The Gallery which is a great little restaurant with an art/photography gallery on the side. This offers an extra slice of culture for those looking for something other than beaches and parties.
Organised trips around the island
If you fancy some more adventurous activities there are a number of tour operators that offer day trips around the island such as bouldering, rock climbing, free diving and Muay Thai boxing. These range in length and cost, and depend on your experience and enthusiasm for the activity.
Getting fit in Koh Tao
Monsoon Gym and Koh Tao Gym and Fitness both offer Muay Thai boxing courses which can be a fantastic way to detox after the crazy parties of Koh Phangan. For a more relaxed option why not enjoy some yoga at Shambala or Grounded.
Exploring the island by motorbike
If you simply want to unwind and enjoy the scenic views of Koh Tao then hire a moped and head out to explore the beaches and viewpoints around the island. There are loads of great coves and beaches to enjoy. Whether you want somewhere with bars and restaurants such as Sairee Beach or if you’d rather have a whole stretch of white sand to yourself you’re bound to find a beach to suit if you look hard enough. Mango Bay, Sai Nuan and Shark Bay are all worth a visit and can be accessed by motorbike, boat or taxi.
Diving in Koh Tao
As Koh Tao is renowned for its diving it would be amiss not to mention it as one of the island’s main attractions.
You can undertake a full PADI course at one of the island’s dive centres or simply enjoy a one-day dive to take in the beautiful coral reefs. There are a huge number of dive centres on the island so it is important to know what to consider when choosing the right centre for you.
Ask the centre about group and boat size, languages spoken by the instructors, refund policies and whether accommodation is included.
Also, check which dive spots you will explore with each centre. If you particularly want to visit the ship wreck off the coast off Mae Haad Bay or desperately need to swim with sharks or turtles, ask about this before booking your trip or course. When you choose you’re course we’re sure you will thoroughly enjoy the diving around Koh Tao!
Nightlife in Koh Tao
For nightlife, head to the bars and restaurants around Sairee Beach for a lively atmosphere and groups of travellers. For an even wilder night, book tickets to the Ladyboy show which offers a musical extravaganza to remember!
There truly is something for everyone on Koh Tao and you can easy fill your days here; whether you end up staying for just a few days or a few weeks!
