Things to Do in Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is famous for its beach parties, but the island offers so much more than just nightly raves. Great for relaxation, adrenalin junkies, hikers and more, you can easily while away a week or two enjoying the activities on Koh Phangan.
Water sports
Many of the beaches around the Koh Phangan offer a range of water sports from banana boat rides to kite-boarding and everything in between. Whether you want to complete a full PADI qualification or simply enjoy an hour or two in the water, Koh Phangan’s activities will keep you entertained.
Chaloklum in the north of the island is great for wakeboarding. With challenging rides and experienced staff, you can perfect your skills on the water with stunning views to boot!
For an afternoon of hilarity on the water, head to Phangan Wipeout in the north if the island. This legendary obstacle course on the water is great fun with slides, swings, rolling barrels and stepping stones looking to send you tumbling into the water with each step!
Land sports
If you’re in need of some sports to get your heart racing, Koh Phangan’s gyms and clubs provide the perfect outlet. Whether you want to join a Muay Thai Boxing school, try your hand at archery or simply work out at one of the island’s gyms, there are plenty of ways to keep fit.
The boxing schools offer tailored courses for everyone from complete novices to those with some experience of the art of Muay Thai. Alternatively, take part in football, volleyball, mountain biking or a fun round of mini golf.
Cookery courses
For a more relaxing activity, why not enjoy one of the island’s cookery classes? These classes have English-speaking teachers who impart their knowledge of Thai cuisine and help you learn to cook some of the most delicious traditional dishes.
Enjoy a bicycle ride to the local market where you will buy the fresh produce, then head back to the kitchen to whip up a storm! Finally, sit down with your new friends to taste your meal and cheers to your new skills.
Trekking
Although there are plenty of tourist hotspots around Koh Phangan, much of the island remains untouched so there are some great hiking trails along the coast and in the mountains.
Trek through the rainforest to witness spectacular waterfalls or hike along the east coast of the island to discover remote bays and secluded coves. If you do not have much experience hiking, you can hire a guide from Phaeng Waterfall National Park from around THB500 per day. As temperatures can be very hot, especially in the rainforest, remember to take plenty of food and water with you to keep well-hydrated throughout the day.
Cultural activities
For those looking to discover Thai culture, Koh Phangan’s C&M Culture Centre provides activities such as massage, dance, yoga, language and art. With daily lessons, you can learn all sorts of skills and take home some truly unique souvenirs for friends and family. Learn to make traditional handicrafts, prepare the perfect pad thai and discover the teachings of Thai Buddhism to gain a greater understanding about this amazing country.
Parties
Of course, many people flocking to Koh Phangan will be coming for one thing: the parties. It doesn’t matter what time of the month you visit, there is bound to be a wild party. From jungle raves to endless beach parties (full moon, half moon, black moon), with fire dancing, glow paint and loud music, these are parties to remember! The best locations for beach parties are Haad Rin and Baan Tai but if you ask the locals they will always be able to point you in the direction of a fun rave!
