The biggest deciding factor when choosing where to stay on Koh Phangan, is how close you want to be to the world-famous Full Moon party.

The night of the Full Moon party and the days leading up to it, are filled with wild nightlife, loud music and hundreds of travellers flocking to Haad Rin Beach. Therefore, if you think you will be one of the party-goers you may want to stay right in the heart of the action. If, however, you think you’re going to want to enjoy some down-time during your stay on Koh Phangan, you may be better choosing somewhere a little further afield which means you can get some rest.

In the heart of Haad Rin

Haad Rin Beach on the southern tip of Koh Phangan is the party capital of the island. As you can imagine, prices peak and availability is slim around the time of each Full Moon Party. Therefore, if you know you are going to be visiting over Full Moon, book your accommodation in advance.

Most hotels and guesthouses around Haad Rin are catered towards revellers flocking to parties and therefore don’t offer much in the way of luxury. However, in more recent years there have been some resorts spring up that include spa facilities and luxurious outdoor pools.

For a cheap and cheerful option, perfect for party-goers, head to Dancing Elephant No.1 Party Hostel ( 95/16 M.6 Baantai, Ko Pha Ngan, Surat Thani, 84280 Haad Rin). As the name suggests, this is the place to stay if you’re a solo traveller looking to party. You will be bound to meet plenty of other travellers looking for a good time. With an on-site bar and cash machine, table tennis and free wifi, this hostel has everything you need – plus it’s only 100m from Haad Rin beach!

If you’re willing to splash out a little, Palita Lodge (119 Haad Rin, Bantai, Koh Phangan, Suratthani, 84280 Haad Rin, Thailand) offers a slice of luxury. Located at the end of Haad Rin beach, this hotel is close to the Full Moon party but provides you with a haven during the day with its secluded private pool, shaded balconies, on-site restaurant and spacious bedrooms.

Staying further afield

Koh Phangan is a fairly small island, therefore, if you want to enjoy the Full Moon party during the night but catch up on some much-needed R&R during the day, you may want to choose your accommodation away from Haad Rin beach. The hotels and resorts around the island can arrange transport to/from the parties, so you won’t need to worry about staying out in the sticks and not being able to enjoy the fun!

Baan Tai beach is a great option as it is located around 15 minutes from Haad Rin beach but offers much quieter accommodation.
