One of the best things about bus travel is that you can almost tailor-make your trip adjusting it to your requirements for privacy and comfort. Different classes and types of buses cater to the different needs of travellers. The cheapest trips are normally offered by standard-class buses. They may be called local, express or ordinary. These are a good choice for shorter trips. Sleepers or VIP coaches are good both for longer and overnight trips. Travelling by night buses allows you to save on a hotel room, but to ensure the most comfortable ride do choose the class of your bus wisely. Pros of Bus Travel
- Bus is the best choice to get to destinations that are not connected by rail or planes. The network of buses often covers almost the whole country, and their routes are well and long-established.
- Opposite to air travel and sometimes rail travel, taking a bus does not require arriving at the bus station much in advance. Check-in, even on international routes, does not take much time. Luggage allowances are usually very traveller-friendly, and the fee for extra luggage, if limits are set, is normally not very high.
- Bus tickets can be more affordable compared to air or fast train tickets. There is always a choice of ticket classes for all pockets. Cheaper standard options may be a bit slow and do not offer top comfort, but anyway acceptable and bring you to your destination. On longer routes, toilets or toilet stops as well as snacks, water, and sometimes toiletries and blankets are almost always included in the price.
- If you are ready to spend more, some VIP coaches offer seating comparable to business class on a plane with wide soft reclining seats, blankets, fewer passengers, and many other perks to make your trip a pleasant journey.
Cons of Bus Travel
- Newer intercity bus terminals are very often located out of the city close to bigger highways to allow buses to avoid city congestion. Unfortunately, it may create extra challenges for travellers, too. Getting to such a terminal may be a problem as in some destinations there are restrictions on vehicles allowed to enter the terminal, and you will have to use special carriers to get there. This results in higher costs as prices may be inflated. Also do calculate extra time if you are travelling during rush hours, especially if you are not familiar with the traffic situation at your starting point.
- Buses are probably the means of transport which runs out of schedule more often than trains or planes. They are heavily dependent on the road situation which sometimes can be unpredictable – accidents, road construction works, detours, etc. This is especially true for travels during weekends, high season, or national holidays. Do keep this in mind and do not plan tight connections.
- Travelling on certain routes or during the most popular periods may require advanced booking. Bear in mind that it is not always possible to show up at the bus station and hop on the next bus – tickets may well be all sold out, so organize your trip accordingly.

Alexia BComfortable seats with USB ports but the whole thing was very confusing. The website and ticket did t explain that we would have to change bus multiple times. We assumed once because of the ferry to get off Cat Ba Island but after that we were told to get off in Hanoi where the staff seemed very confused that we said we were going to Cao Bang- they kept asking if we wanted Sapa. They would ask, look at our Ricky confused and then wonder off with no information. We then got a bus from Daiichi to another transport office of a different company. They also seemed confused but the lady eventually confirmed there was a bus coming for us. The pick up time was meant to be 10am but got brought forward to 8:30am which was communicated clearly but was stressful when we had washing to collect that morning because we thought we had till 10. We were originally supposed to arrive at 19:50 but didn’t get there till 20:45 which is weird seeing as we left so early. The driving was very fast and I wouldn’t say smooth. If you experience motion sickness definitely take meds beforehand because the roads are very windy. Unfortunately this is the only bus service we can seem to find in the north so hopefully our next bus runs more smoothly!

Marc SWe thought we booked one bus and in the end we had to use two buses and had to change in the middle of the night.
It is absolutely intransparent in the booking that we needed to switch the bus. We thought we booked one bus from Sapa to Ninh Binh.
We booked the bus for 11 pm and this time was also written in our voucher. In the end we got a message that our bus starts at 10:30 pm. Also this was intransparent and not clear for us.
The staff at the office in Sapa were very unfriendly and couldn't help with any questions (whether out of ignorance or simply because they couldn't be bothered).

Courtney CBus was comfortable, however, driver spoke NO English. This usually wouldn't bother us as other have used Google Translate to let us know where/why we were stopping and for how long. Every stop we made required a payment for the toilet. And what was meant to be a 6hr trip was closer to 8hrs. Do NOT bank on Hanoi to Sa Pa being 6hrs!!

Danny WAwful organisation at the office when getting people on busses, I was sent back and forth between 2 busses in the rain about 5 times with them both saying wrong bus until I finally got on one of them. Expect better for the expensive price I paid. Also there was a changeover which was not clearly advertised before. After that however bus was comfortable and changeover was smooth between busses.

Tisha CThe drive alone was fine but the driver was having a full blown conversation majority of the ride without realizing that he was on speaker. It was loud and distracting and would not allow for one to relax. Also, I believe he had a friend onboard who he allowed to watch his videos on his phone on loud mode disrupting other passengers and having long conversations on the phone as well without considering everyone else (tourists).

Juan AThe trip was perfect, they arrived early, they informed us by mail of the stop change. They assisted us in the office and on arrival and everything was very clear. The bus was comfortable and had massage and USB TV, and on the way they stoped 3 times to go to the bathroom. Sometimes you moved a lot in the cabin, but it's normal being a bus and seeing how the roads are here. I recommend it 100%

Voices and talking should be kept to a minimum from certain times to ensure passengers on the bus are able to rest.
