Entertaining Buy 2nd Class with air con ticket and you have a reserved seat. 3rd class is a scrum! At the station inform the station master of your train and he will ensure you get on the right train. As will the tourist helpers. No over-track bridges. Everyone just wanders across the tracks

Is Bangkok safe for solo travelers?

Bangkok is generally safe for solo travelers, with a few precautions. Petty crime, like pickpocketing, can occur in crowded places, so keep personal belongings secure. Use reputable transportation options such as metered taxis or ride-hailing apps. Public transit, like the BTS Skytrain and MRT, is efficient and safe.

Stick to well-lit, populated areas at night and be cautious in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Scams targeting tourists can happen; be wary of unsolicited offers and check prices beforehand. Tap water in Bangkok is not safe to drink; use bottled water instead, which is widely available.

Dining options range from street food to high-end restaurants. Street food is popular and generally safe, but choose vendors with high turnover for freshness.

Lastly, dress modestly when visiting temples and respect local customs. Women's shoulders and knees should be covered in religious sites.

What's special about Bangkok?

Bangkok offers a mix of historic and modern attractions. Key sites include the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, featuring intricate Thai architecture. For shopping, visit Chatuchak Weekend Market or the luxury malls along Sukhumvit Road.

Public transportation is efficient with the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway, with fares ranging from 16 to 59 THB ($0.45 to $1.60). Street food is abundant, with dishes like pad Thai and mango sticky rice costing around 50 to 100 THB ($1.40 to $2.80). For dining, consider visiting Chinatown for authentic local flavors.

Tap water is not recommended for drinking; opt for filtered or bottled water. Local etiquette includes removing shoes before entering homes and temples, and dressing modestly when visiting religious sites.

Train

Train is a often a great choice for long-haul travel especially if you opt for a night sleeper train with berths which will allow you to sleep all your journey through. To make the most of your train journey, choose the class of your ticket wisely.

Note that there are air-conditioned and fan-only carriages; private compartments for 2 or 4; hard and soft seats.
Though the upper class you get the smoother is your journey, often second class air-conditioned or fan-only sleepers are a good money saving alternative.

Van

Vans are a great alternative - or, in many cases - your only option - if you need to travel overland within one and the same province or neighbouring provinces or states. Vans ply the roads between Ayutthaya and Bangkok, too.

Things to remember: When travelling by van with huge luggage buying a separate seat for your suitcase or backpack is a good idea. Do not expect there is a roomy luggage compartment in a van - there is actually none and your fellow passengers are unlikely to appreciate your luggage stuck under their feet, alas.
