Thais opt to holiday in Chiang Mai

A leading hotel reservations website says the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai is fast becoming the destination of choice for domestic tourism. Hotels.com collated data over a three-month period and found that Chiang Mai was the number one choice among Thais searching for the best deals on hotels for the forthcoming festive season.

The hotels consolidator recorded sales for the period between 21 December and New Year’s Day on confirmed bookings made between 14 August and 12 November 2014. The figures attest to the veracity of a claim made by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The national agency said more and more Thais were choosing Chiang Mai and its environs for their holidays.

According to Hotels.com, the Japanese capital city of Tokyo was the second most popular destination for Thais. The Thai capital of Bangkok received the third highest number of searches and was followed in fourth and fifth places by the seaside resorts of Hua Hin and Pattaya respectively.

Chiang Mai is usually busier over the winter months between mid-November and February. The weather is fairly cool at this time of year and visiting attractions such as Doi Suthep Temple or Inthanon Mountain or indulging in the region’s eclectic outdoor activities are delightful.
