Puerto Princesa Sights and POI

Contrary to what some would lead you to believe, you'll never run out of things to see and to do in Puerto Princesa. For those who are visiting for the first time, we made a short list of activities that will surely make your stay something to talk about for days.

City Tours

To get better acquainted with the city, it's always best to start with a city tour. A half-day tour is available for 600PHP per pax inclusive of transfers, guide, admission fees, and snack. Our first stop was in Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center and it was thrilling to see baby and adult crocodiles. There were also souvenir shops with cheaper items than what's sold in the mall. We also had a quick stop at Mitra Ranch, there were ziplines and horses but there really wasn't anything much to see. Afterwards, we stopped over at Baker's Hill. We bought a few boxes of hopia and had a look around. There are lots of photo opportunities with cartoon characters and a Marilyn Monroe statue. There was even a small tower that you can climb for a nice view of the countryside. Afterwards, our group went to Plaza Cuartel which is a grim reminder of the Second World War. If you like history, this is an interesting stop. Lastly, we dropped by Immaculate Conception Cathedral which was a fitting way to end the day. It was a peaceful interlude and we were able to wind down while marvelling over the stained glass and the beautiful interior.

Firefly Tours

In the evening, experience something magical with the Firefly Watching activity along the Iwahig River. Priced at 1,100PHP per pax, this tour requires about 4 hours and includes van transfer and buffet dinner. We suggest you arrive early since there is a bit of a wait as they can only load a maximum of 4 people including the boatman. Bring mosquito repellent, too. We forgot to bring some but they're selling small sachets at the onsite store.

The whole thing was surreal and enchanting as our boat silently glides along the water. It was so dark we couldn't even see people behind us. Our guide has a red light that he would point in the mangroves and then the trees would literally light up like bulbs on a Christmas tree! We're city girls so it was an amazing time doing some stargazing on the side and our guide also pointed out some constellations. Do not bother trying to take photos and just enjoy the experience.

Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village

If you like creepy crawlies, you might find it worth your time to visit the Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village (Bunk House Road, Santa Monica). Although it is essentially a butterfly conservatory, there weren't too many butterflies around. What we did have plenty of time for were the guides coaxing people to hold scorpions, geckos, bugs, and other insects. They also have snakes and bear cats. You also get to meet the indigenous people at the tribal village for some cultural experience. If this is not part of your day tour, admission fee is only 50PHP per pax.

Palawan Special Battalion WW2 Memorial Museum

Lastly, if you have some time to kill at the airport, make your way to the Palawan Special Battalion WW2 Memorial Museum (Rizal Avenue Extension, Barangay Banaco-Bancao). For only 50PHP, you get access to WWII relics and even some cool vintage vehicles. It's a small museum and 30 minutes should be enough time to go around. Everything's well organized though so we learned a lot about the war time in Palawan. What's even cooler is we had a chance to don the army uniform and helmet and ride the jeep for a souvenir photo.
