Weather in the Philippines
The general climate of the Philippines is one typical of a tropical island. There are only two seasons: rainy season and dry season. The dry season begins in late November and ends in May. The wet season begins in June and continues until October. Something to take note of as a potential traveller, is that September and October are the months that frequently fall during the typhoon season and probably not bathing suit weather.
Dry season: November through May
During the dry season, two general temperatures will be experienced.
December to February offers cooler, dry weather with January being the coolest month of the year (+- 22 degrees Celsius).
Hot, dry weather kicks off from March to June with April and May being the hottest months of the year. One can anticipate temperatures in the high thirties degree Celsius. Visitors who are not accustomed to these high temperatures may want to ensure that their accommodation provides air conditioning or at least a fan.
The best time for visiting islands
With the cloudless blue skies and the ocean at its clearest, the hotter months of April and May are the ideal time to visit the Philippines if you are wanting an island getaway.
Snorkelling and diving conditions are also optimal during this time. During these summery months, Cebu offers wonderful tours to travellers and the world-renowned Island Hopping tours across Coron and El Nido are busiest during this time.
However, if you are visiting during these months and prefer cooler conditions, head to Northern Luzon to explore Taal Volcano and feel the fresh air in your lungs.
The best time for spotting whale sharks and green sea turtles
Taking note of the seasons in the Philippines, as well as your travelling interests, can greatly assist you in best planning the various timings of your desired attractions. Swimming with the polka-dotted whale sharks is best to do from February to April and visiting Apo Island to swim with green sea turtles is recommended from January to May.
The best time for hiking amid rice terraces
For the travellers looking to hike amongst the Batad and Banaue rice terraces, the ideal time to visit would be between March and June. Unfortunately, it’s probably wise to avoid this eighth wonder of the world during July and August as the heavy rainfall and muddy conditions frequently results in unsafe landslides.
Rainy season: June through October
However, as is often the case with travelling, sometimes we cannot plan around the rain or less than perfect weather conditions. Luckily, for travellers visiting the Philippines during the rainy season there are still fun and interesting options.
The best time for some water sports
If you enjoy water sports then Cagayan de Oro is a definite must-see. Gorgeous waterfalls, white-water rafting and river trekking are highly recommended during this time of year.
Also, not to be missed during these months is Siargao – surfers’ paradise. The best time to visit is October and after, but it still remains an excellent rainy season destination even prior to October.
The best time for beating the crowds
Hiking Mount Isarog in Naga City also offers an assortment of water sports in addition to the breath-taking views following the various hikes. Homey, delicious food is also on offer in Naga City which is perfect for cold weather.
Baguio, an urbanized city in Northern Luzon, is also a fine place to get cosy during the cooler months. Not only is this city celebrated for its food and fine coffee, but it also has beautiful, relaxing hot springs to keep toasty and snug even while outdoors.
The best time for paying less
During the rainy season beautiful, palm-studded Boracay is also still on offer, too. It is less humid and cooler during these months and is significantly cheaper, too.
The same is also true for visiting and travelling around Cebu. With a more neutral climate and less tourists during these months, you’ll have less crowds at the waterfalls and beaches.
What to pack any time of the year
And sometimes even after rigorous and meticulous travel planning, it occasionally rains and storms (even when on holiday). Prepare for this accordingly. Pack a book, a set of playing cards and a warm jacket along with the sunscreen and sunglasses.
