The overall experience was VERY BAD!!! Upon arrival at bus station 2 in Phuket, we were told that we could take an earlier bus than we had booked. The only difference would be that we would have to wait a little longer in Surat Thani because we would be taking the same boat to Koh Phangan. Fine, we'd rather wait a little longer there than at this not-so-pleasant bus station. The journey went via Khao Lak and Khao Sok. It was very long, partly because the driver stopped countless times to pick up and drop off people and goods. The driver drove like an F1 driver, at times very irresponsibly, and we did not always feel safe. After a crazy 6.5-hour drive, we arrived at a restaurant/bus stop. We had to wait here and were given no information whatsoever. We can communicate using Google Translate, but there was a complete unwillingness to provide any information. After half an hour, we left in a minivan to a place by the river, where we were pointed to the boat that would take us to Koh Phangan. This was a wooden ship that would probably have been written off in Europe 100 years ago. The lower deck was crammed with food, scooters and who knows what else, while the upper deck was one large mattress on which about 50 people had to lie down. There was one toilet on the boat... It is unbelievable and unacceptable that people are transported on this. Of course, we weren't forced, but we had no other choice, as there was no communication whatsoever. We paid more than 2500 THB for this trip, while the boat trip was sold on site for 60 THB per person. It is a gross scandal and I would not advise ANYONE to book this trip through this organisation. 12 GO should definitely NOT offer this.

The pdf itinerary needs to be more detailed. It should state what kind of vehicles will be taken. It should have a route. I booked the trip having no idea I’d be in a van that long, especially with only 1 bathroom break. I also didn’t know I’d be transferring to a bus after the long van ride to get to the ferry. These things should be known ahead of time.

In summary: Successful pick up and drop off. Arrived at Koh Phangan 1.5 hours late. Many redirections with limited communication. During the trip, I felt uncertain and uneasy about whether or not we were in the right van/transport/path etc. Trusted the process. Bullet points of what happened. - picked up from one driver who didn't look at my ticket - eventually was asked to move to a different van, most likely to reallocate luggage space between the vans. When we would reconfirm the new van was to Koh phangan, the driver would say "Big bus, big bus!!"... Not really sure what that meant at the time. - dropped off at Phuket terminal 2 (old Phuket Town area) and got directed to the reception, who finally reviewed my Phantip e-ticket. The agent gave me the bus and ferry tickets. She wrote the platform # where we would board our "big bus". - big bus drove, and we stopped for brunch at 10 am, at Luk MI Restaurant. We had a 30-minute window. Buffet style. The food had flies on it. No toilet paper in the bathroom. - bus driver would talk so loudly on his phone calls, which made it hard to take a nap. Although if you're travelling alone, I wouldn't advise to fully fall asleep as you are all disoriented when they yell instructions at travellers with specific end destinations. - big bus drove the rest of the way and arrived just before 1 pm to Raja Ferry Public Company Limited where they called all Koh Phangan travellers to immediately get off. - the bus driver directed us to board a small passenger trolley. Our group waited there for about 5 minutes alone with no instructions of what would happen next. - then another worker shepherd us to a different shuttle, this time attached to a truck which drove our group to the actual Raja Ferry Pier, Don Sak. This was about a 5-minute drive away. - they told people who are going to Koh phangan and Koh Samui to go to Pier 3. Why did they ask KP ppl to get off the bus if we were going to meet at the same place anyways?? - 1:45 pm they call people travelling to Koh Samui to board the ferry. They tell Koh phangan people to wait. - 15 min later they tell Koh phangan people to go to Pier 1. - 2:20, boarded ferry. 3pm ferry departed. Arrived at KP at 6 pm. - Tip, don't catch a taxi right when you reach the parking lot at KP ferry pier. Make the effort to walk down the path before reaching the street. The shared taxis charge about 50 Baht less at $150 per person. If you're 2 people, you can negotiate 200 baht for 2 people.

The bus was clean and left pretty much on time. At the stop 2h30min in, the driver said 20 min rest stop but it was more like 40-45min. I rushed to find a toilet and something to eat, when I could have taken my time. The ferry transfer was straightforward and easy. Very good overall.

The bus was very good. But the ferry was 2 hrs late. Also the washroom of the ferry wasn't usable, especially for ladies. Expected better. Thought, I'm in the middle of my return trip, also same via Phantip Travel (Ferry+Bus). I'm in ferry at the moment. This one is good. Cleaner washroom for women. On time and the speed is also fine.

Is water in Koh Phangan safe to drink?

Tap water in Koh Phangan is not considered safe for drinking. Local authorities recommend using bottled water for consumption. Bottled water is widely available at convenience stores and supermarkets across the island. If you prefer filtered water, consider using a portable water filter or boiling tap water before drinking.

Are taxis in Koh Phangan expensive?

Taxi fares on Koh Phangan can be relatively high compared to mainland Thailand due to limited public transportation and the island's hilly terrain. Expect to pay around 100-150 THB ($3-4.50) for short distances within a town, while longer trips across the island may range from 300-500 THB ($9-15).

Shared songthaews (pickup trucks with benches) offer a more affordable option, with prices typically around 100 THB ($3) per person for common routes. Always agree on a fare before starting the trip and consider renting a scooter for more flexibility, which costs about 200-300 THB ($6-9) per day.

Is one day enough in Koh Phangan?

Spending one day in Koh Phangan allows for a brief exploration of its highlights. Begin with a morning visit to the island's beaches, such as Haad Rin or Thong Nai Pan. For lunch, enjoy local Thai dishes at a beachside restaurant, with meals typically costing around 150-300 THB ($4.50-$9).

In the afternoon, explore the island's waterfalls like Than Sadet or hike to viewpoints such as Khao Ra. If your visit coincides with a Full Moon Party, experiencing this nighttime event is a must. However, it is worth noting that Koh Phangan's attractions, such as its diverse beaches and vibrant nightlife, may require more time for a fuller experience.

For transportation, renting a scooter costs about 250-300 THB ($7.50-$9) per day. Tap water is not safe to drink, so opt for bottled water.
