Great speed boat ride, lovely cool cafe to wait for departure. Very pretty spot on the beach. Departure delayed 20 mins but time went quickly and very efficient boarding and disembarking.

There was no driver to pick us up from the Airport and when a substitute driver showed up he drove us all the way over to Nathan Pier across the island (I thought I avoided this when booking). Barely made the ferry, we were rushed to ticket office to change the voucher, then rush to the ship and throw the bags onto the deck, enter and the ferry left immediately. Although we made it just in time, since we travelled with an infant this was really stressful for us.

With boarding there was help of the staff with suitcase. On arrival we had to it ourselves. Strange because gate at the pier of Thong Salan is quit narrow and a bit chaotic.

The whole timeschedule was one big mystery. When we went to meet Your people at the meeting point at the airport. We were told to come back at 14.00h. At 13.45u we were hauled out of restaurant because the transfer would leave. We received stickers stating a departure time of 15.30h with an arrival time of 16.30h at our final destination (according our booking), Once at the pier we were told that our embarcation time would be 16.30h (not 15.30h as booked and stated on our stickers), and our arrival time would be 17.00h. Which didn’t coincide with the taxi which was waiting for us at the arrivalpoint. Very confusing, frustrating and not very satisfactory.

What not to wear in Koh Phangan?

Koh Phangan’s tropical climate and laid-back vibe influence its dress code, but there are cultural norms to respect. Avoid wearing bikinis or swimwear away from beaches or pool areas, as it’s considered inappropriate in public spaces. When visiting temples, dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees—this shows respect for local traditions. For outdoor activities like hiking, avoid flip-flops and opt for sturdy footwear to prevent injuries. Light, breathable fabrics are ideal for hot weather, but bring a light jacket for evenings or ferry rides. Avoid camouflage prints, as they can be associated with military attire, which is frowned upon in Thailand. Practical tip: Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party is casual, but wearing waterproof shoes and avoiding expensive accessories is wise due to the beach setting and crowds.

Can you walk everywhere in Koh Phangan?

While Koh Phangan is relatively small, walking everywhere isn’t practical due to its hilly terrain and scattered attractions. Coastal areas like Haad Rin or Thong Sala have walkable streets with shops, restaurants, and beaches nearby, making them convenient for pedestrians. However, many beaches, waterfalls, and viewpoints are located far apart or accessed via steep, narrow roads. Renting a motorbike is the most common way to explore the island efficiently, but ensure you have a license and experience due to challenging roads. Alternatively, shared taxis (songthaews) connect major spots, though they’re less frequent in remote areas. Tip: Walking can be enjoyable in village areas or during short hikes, but always carry water and sunscreen to stay safe in the tropical heat.

Is tipping expected in Koh Phangan?

Tipping in Koh Phangan is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, leaving small change (10–20 THB) or rounding up the bill is common practice. For more upscale dining, tipping 5–10% is polite but not required. Hotel staff, such as housekeepers or porters, also appreciate small tips of 20–50 THB for helpful service. Taxi drivers and songthaew operators typically don’t expect tips, though rounding up fares is a kind gesture. For massage therapists, a tip of 50–100 THB is customary if you’re satisfied with the experience. Cultural insight: While Thais value generosity, tipping is less institutionalized than in Western countries, so even small amounts are received warmly and with gratitude.
