Driver whatsapped me before I boarded the bus and instruct me where to go. The 'seat' is very comfortable, you can lie all the way flat to sleep.

The only downside is that the constant beeping of the pedestrian crossing signal is quite disturbing when trying to sleep

We booked two "VIP cabins" with HK Buslines from Hanoi to Sapa under the impression that this would be the lie-down cabins. Once we booked, the departure time given to us was 45 minutes earlier than what was originally listed. When we arrived at the pick-up point, the person at the check-in desk was not helpful and gave no instruction which made us almost miss our bus. She did not say anything and just gave me a ticket which had the license plate on it of our bus. 45 minutes after the communicated departure time, a shuttle bus with a completely different license plate than on our ticket came. They did not invite us on board or anything and we only realized we were supposed to board this one because we went back in and asked the check-in counter, wondering what was going on. They took us to the HK bus depot and we finally boarded our bus with the appropriate license plate, which turned out to be a completely different set-up than expected. The bus driver was quite rude when we were boarding and tried to snatch the ticket out of our hands rudely. The journey itself was fine but communication needs to be vastly improved and it needs to be made clear what type of seats are actually being sold at time of purchase.

Crampt, if you’re fat you should pay for two seats mandatory! I was next to some fat philipino and it was horrible he was like an oven against my skin I would have rather had a normal bus seat sat up!

I would not recommend this service for Hanoi-Sapa. The driving was erratic and we were flung about in our cabins for the entire drive even when on straight main roads. We made several stops for seemingly no reason. The chargers in our (2) cabins didn’t work. The journey was nearly an hour longer than advertised. The was an unpleasant smell of rotting fruit in the air. The driver was constantly and excessively honking the horn so sleep wasn’t really possible.

I had read that HK Buslines were good and they exceeded expectations. A very new, comfortable bus, bang on time arrival and an unexpected free shuttle to our hotel. The only negative was that the attendant on board seemed to do very little and wasn’t helpful to people. He also shut all the blinds on the right side front of the bus to rest and was going to shut the one I was looking out of until he realised I had opened it.

Train

Train is a often a great choice for long-haul travel especially if you opt for a night sleeper train with berths which will allow you to sleep all your journey through. To make the most of your train journey, choose the class of your ticket wisely.

Note that there are air-conditioned and fan-only carriages; private compartments for 2 or 4; hard and soft seats.
Though the upper class you get the smoother is your journey, often second class air-conditioned or fan-only sleepers are a good money saving alternative.

Van

Vans are a great alternative - or, in many cases - your only option - if you need to travel overland within one and the same province or neighbouring provinces or states. Vans ply the roads between Hanoi and Sapa, too.

Things to remember: When travelling by van with huge luggage buying a separate seat for your suitcase or backpack is a good idea. Do not expect there is a roomy luggage compartment in a van - there is actually none and your fellow passengers are unlikely to appreciate your luggage stuck under their feet, alas.
