Lampang Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
We feel that Lampang somewhat lacks really budget accommodation, but with Chiang Mai being so close there is absolutely no surprise. There are decent offerings in the mid-range category and we would suggest picking out your guesthouse from from this price range.
Budget
A quiet neighbourhood with lots of trees, few steps from the river and just a block away from Wat Pra Tu Pong, which will be the main landmark for your whole visit to Lampang, form a wonderful setting for *TTT Guesthouse Lampang (82, Phamai Road) making this little guesthouse a perfect solution for people on a budget. The rooms have nothing more than a bed with a thin mattress and a fan but the wooden floor and walls add an extra touch that will make you forget about the spartan furniture. Common bathrooms and showers with hot water are cleaned multiple times a day and the owner, Norm, is a funny character with a lot of stories about Lampang to tell and recommendations to give, always ready to share a beer with you at sunset.
Prices are not as cheap as in the most touristy places in Thailand, but this is basically the best you can get in town and especially considering the primary location THB350 for a double room is not bad. If you travel solo and the smaller room is available the rate will be THB250. It’s unlikely you bring your pet in Thailand, but keep in mind that they are allowed to stay in this property – in case this bothers you in any way. More comfortable rooms with air-con and an extra bed for a third person are available at THB600 (the bathroom is always shared though). If you need a bicycle you can rent it here.
Mid-Range
Moving to the southern side of the river (or the western, depends where you’re in town since the river goes up and down), Le Neuf Nakorn (353/4 Mengrai Road) would be our first choice when we have some extra baht to spend. Despite the fact that the three-storey building itself is not particularly memorable, all the rooms are new, spotless, with extremely comfortable beds featuring thick and soft mattresses, flat-screen TVs, modern private toilettes, air-cons, WI-FI, one desk and a large balcony per room. A simple but substantial breakfast is included into the rate and motorbike rental and shuttle service to the airport are available.
The young couple running the hotel are super friendly and helpful; they are an endless source of information about the area and also have a good command of English. A standard double room will come at THB690 while adding THB300 more you can have a bigger room with and extra couch and a futon bed to accommodate up to three guests.
Walking a few hundred meters east, on the same side of the river, the well-established Riverside Guest House (286, Talad Kao Road) offers a wide range of rooms in more traditional Thai wooden buildings surrounded by a nice tropical garden with quite a good restaurant to have dinner right on the river. The rooms are so different in size and design that the best thing is to get there and take a look at least at a coupe of them. We personally found the cheaper fan options with shared toilettes not worth the money (THB400), while the most expensive standard or deluxe air-con rooms with a private bathroom (prices starting at THB800) are really nice and well furnished. It’s a good place anyway to rent a motorbike (THB200) or a bicycle (THB60).
Top End
A bit away from the river and closer to the bus station, Wienglakor Hotel (138/35 Phaholyothin Rd.) is your best bet in the up-market range in town – opposite to larger resorts which sit outside the city boundaries. Even if it’s a bit old and a way too classic for our tastes, the setting is nice with beautiful views over the mountains and a pleasant garden with a good restaurant. The rooms are spacious, well furnished with stylish wooden inserts, comfortable big beds and of course air-cons, TVs, and lots of other features. Breakfast is included and offers Thai, Chinese, Halal and Western favourites. Standard rooms start at THB1600 while junior suites (one of the best rooms you can get in the city centre) will come for THB3500.
