Koh Mak Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
Although fairly undeveloped tourism wise, there are still plenty of great resorts to choose from on Koh Mak. Most of the resorts are found at Ao Kao in the southwest, but there are other options available if you prefer a different beach. For slightly more upmarket options, Ao Suan Yai is better, whilst those seeking solitude should head for one of the resorts at Ao Nid or on the east coast of the island.
Where to stay in Ao Kao
Starting with the most developed area, Ao Kao has lots of great options for backpackers and families.
The best budget option here for backpackers is Baan Ing Kao (bungalow with fan from THB400), located on the gorgeous Laem Tookkata beach. This bungalow resort has a super relaxed atmosphere, with guests spending most of their time chilling in hammocks or snorkelling. They also serve delicious Thai food here, cooked lovingly by the owners.
Monkey Island Resort (bungalows from THB350) is another good value option. They have lots of different style bungalows, depending on how much you want to spend, but even the most expensive is still very cheap! They are all thoughtfully decorated, and a great place to stay if you want to be close by to a live music venue, Monkey Bar.
The best family option at Ao Kao has to be Big Easy (bungalows with air-con from THB1,200). Although it’s tiny, with only six bungalows, this only adds to its appeal as the perfect quiet spot for families.
Palm Beach Resort (family bungalows THB3,500) is another fantastic choice for families, and possibly even the best on the whole island. Each of the villas here have a rooftop terrace, which is perfect for chilling out on in the evening, enjoying some sunset drinks and playing games. They also have a pool, jacuzzi and music playing on the beach. The only negative about this resort is that they are not open all year round, and close during the rainy season.
Where to stay in Ao Suan Yai
Over on the southwest coast, Ao Suan Yai is where you want to stay if you really love watching the sunset. Whilst most of the accommodation here is midrange or semi-luxury, there are a couple of spots that would be acceptable if you are on a budget.
Suchanaree (bungalows from THB400) and Koh Mak Cococape Resort (bungalows from THB400) are the cheapest, but prices increase considerably in the high season. The latter is quite unique, with various types of accommodation available, from thatched bungalows on stilts, to converted wooden boats. They also have a pool and it’s very close by to some excellent snorkelling spots.
For families, Koh Mak Resort (bungalows from THB1,600) has plenty of facilities and activities available to keep everyone busy. They have an infinity pool, spa, restaurant, watersport equipment rental, and their very own windsurfing club.
Where to stay on the East Coast
On the east coast, development is limited to a few resorts dotted here and there, plus a few villages. But mostly, it’s home to lots of plantations and orchards. This is where you should stay if you want to escape civilization and forget about all your worries.
Nature lovers will enjoy Koh Mak Green View Resort (bungalows from THB 500), whilst couples should head to Little Moon Villa (double rooms from THB1,300) for a romantic and tranquil atmosphere. The latter is also very close by to the stunning Laem Son beach, although they also have their own small beach too.
Bamboo Hideaway Resort (bungalows THB2,000) is another great midrange resort, and as an added bonus it has an excellent in-house Italian restaurant (La Dolce Vita). Unfortunately, most resorts on the east coast are not open during rainy season, with the exception of Little Moon Villa.
Where to stay in Ao Nid
Last but not least, the southeastern bay of Ao Nid has a couple of nice resorts, but there aren’t any sandy beaches on this side of the island. It’s probably more suited towards people who just want to spend lots of time chilling out at a resort whilst enjoying some picturesque views.
Ao Pong Resort (bungalows from THB400) is perfect for backpackers looking to recharge their batteries, whilst Sea Breeze @ Koh Mak (double rooms from THB1,200) is a nice, quiet spot for couples. Sea Breeze also has a pool that overlooks the bay, where you can enjoy a few sundowners of an evening and take in the spectacular ocean views.
