Sapa to Hanoi Destination Reviews

DB
When you are booking this transfer, the location is different. After you book, they change it and are rude to you and do not respond. Also we have booked upper seats, but they gave us lower and we where not able to change it.

Bought tickets for a 4pm bus ride but was contacted and pressured to be at the bus station before 2.30pm. Thankfully we didnt have any urgent plans set and was able to 'accomodate' their request but i told them to pick us up instead of us going there. They picked us up and dropped us at a location (not the designated spot at Sapa SSB) and told us to enter the limousine. We were angered as we booked a sleeper bus. The limousine was empty so surely they just wanted to fill up the space. So we did not follow and then another van took us to Sapa Market where we were given the Saoviet sleeper bus to Hanoi. When all of this was happening we simultaneously contacted the helpline but the response was rather very slow, riduculous and not helpful at all. Thankfully bus ride was pleasant but the driver is very rude, looking inside my bag to check if i brought food and rushing us to put on our shoes when we arrived at the destination. We had a child with us so surely it was a hassle and took some time to get us set to board off the bus unlike other passengers who were all adults and had not much luggage with them. Surely book from other platforms.

The bus was great, everything as described. Pick up point was well descriped and check in was done smoothly. Also the bus started pretty much on time. The transfer to airport was done by shuttle van. Between changing the transport we waited for 30 minutes for another bus to come. We had enough time before the flight (3 hours), so that was not the problem. Then they dropped us out at domestic or international departure, which was great. The less convenient experience we had with smell. I guess we had some fruit duria in storage room, which could we smell also on the bus and the bad smell stayed with us even later, because all the luggage had that smell. The fruit was packed in white boxes and also taped, but still.

Excellent comfort. Wide cabin. Clean. Bottled water and clean toilet at back of bus. Best bus journey during my 30 days in Vietnam. The bus company was SAO VIET.

The ride itself was okay. Unfortunately, the staff were very unfriendly (when booking/ticket collection and on the bus). There was a toilet on the bus, shortly after departure it stank so bad that you could hardly use the seats at the back. They fixed it later, but after that there was still not 100% good. TV and wifi didn‘t work

When we arrived at the bus station 1 hour early, it seems like we were not included in the booking for 1PM. The receptionist moved us to 1:30 pm without any explanations, maybe she had a hard time explaining in english. In any case, the bus we rode on was clean and comfortable. The ride out of Sa Pa gave us motion sickness, but it eventually settled down after the zig zag roads.

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
