Tak Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
The cheapest options in Tak ask around THB300 for very spartan tooms; anything slightly more decent will cost you from THB800 – not the best value for your money compared to what you can find in some of the neighbouring provinces like Sukhothai or Kamphaeng Phet.
Budget
A few blocks from the river and right in the city centre, Sanguanthai Hotel (619, Taksin Road) is one of the most affordable and convenient accommodation options in Tak. The 23 rooms are quite basic and simple, with not much of attention to details and style, but they’re kept clean and tidy and they come with an attached toilette with hot shower. Free Wi-Fi is available in the whole building and a small TV is a bonus that we did not actually expect. Rates start at THB300 for a fan room; with just THB50 more you can upgrade to an air-conditioned one.
Mid-Range
Also in the city centre, the quite new Soho Boutique Hotel (31 Mahathai Bamrung Rd, parallel to Taksin road walking east), offers the best value for money in Tak; stylish rooms and all the common areas in the hotel are tastefully decorated. Rooms are spacious and modern, beds are comfortable and come with a whole bunch of pillows. Attached bathrooms in standard rooms are on the small side but are still well designed and cleann a. Air-con, a flat screen TV, Wi-Fi and free toiletries are provided in every room. A good buffet breakfast with lots of choices is included into the rate. A good gym is free to use for the guests and will keep you occupied after you are done with the few attractions in town.
The staff is friendly and speak quite good English. Rates for a standard room start at THB850.
Top End
Offering the best views of the river and a central location, Viang Tak Riverside Hotel (236 Jompol Road) is the only 4 star hotel in town. Even if it clearly shows its age in mevery detail, it’s still a good choice for those who don’t mind spending a few extra THB. Standard double rooms (THB800) are definitely not better than the Soho’s ones, while deluxe rooms (THB1200) are at least bigger. They all come with an air-con, Wi-fi and TV, but we found that furnishing cries for some facelift and if this veteran hotel still wants to keep its leadership in Tak, they absolutely need to invest in renovation. On a brighter side are the facilities which are great and include an outdoor swimming pool, a snooker table and a bar with live music opened till late at night. The included breakfast (not into standard rooms’ rates, though) is quite impressive with plenty of options of Western, Thai and Chinese food.
Accommodation in Umphang
If you are thinking of spending a night in Umphang while visiting Thi Lo Su Waterfall, quite a few simple and cheap guesthouses are available along with a couple of options in the mid-range budget for those who need a bit more of comfort. Everything is within walking distance from the town centre and reservations are not necessary any time of the year.
Right in the heart of the village, Umphang House (Sukhumwattana Soi 4) offers very simple double rooms in a concrete building with fan and attached bathroom for THB250, or nicer wooden bungalows (with private bathrooms) with a beautiful porch to chill out and drink a beer at night for THB300. Standard bungalows are quite small and if you need more space they have some larger options at THB400. Wi-Fi works around the reception area and in some of the bungalows closest to it. The staff speak enough English to help you in organizing your tour and they offer mountain bikes for rent if you like to explore the surrounding area by yourself.
