Places to Eat in Lamphun
Lamphun offers several very good restaurants serving delicious local specialties. We recommend you to try at least one of the mentioned below to make an idea of what real Northern Thai food is about.
Markets and street stalls
Located in the south part of the old city within a walking distance from all the major Lamphun attractions, the day market and the nearby night market are the most obvious options to grab a quick lunch during your visit to the temples or to have dinner for everyone who fancies some good street food. Don’t expect too much in terms of variety but all the classic Thai dishes are there, including the most popular market snacks. Prices are cheap starting at around THB30 while all the different meat skewers come for THB5/THB10 a piece.
If you walk a couple of hundred meters to the east you’ll come across more stalls with more or less the same offer. Noodle shops and Thai restaurants offering simple Thai dishes can be found at almost every corner in the old town.
Local Food
Located on the main road to Chiang Mai 1,5 km north of Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai, Dao Kanon (180, Charoen Road) is a long time running establishment, very popular with locals and famous for being the best restaurant in town for traditional Northern Thai cuisine. Kaeng hang lei, a pork curry, is one of their signature dishes – it is tender stewed pork curry with garlic, tamarind and ginger. Extra tasty and not particularly spicy, this could be a great choice for everyone who can’t deal with chili anymore. The menu is quite extensive and there will be enough choices for everyone.
Other recommendations include northern fried sausages, grilled minced pork and fried catfish. Delicious sauces (nam prick) come with everything; be careful with these ones because some of them can be super-hot. The staff doesn’t speak English that much but they do their best to be helpful and you’ll find a way to explain yourself – and understand them. Most of the dishes come within the THB50/THB100 price range.
Please note that there are more than one restaurant (at least two others) on the road to Chiang Mai sharing the same name; the one we are recommending is really close to the city centre while the other ones are way farther. Dao Kanon is open every day from 9:30am to 8:00pm.
Add On (268 Rop Meuang Nai St) sits closer to the old city and can come handy if you do not want to walk much. Located on the western bank of the river Kuang, it offers a large menu with a lot of choices of traditional Thai dishes and regional Northern Thai cuisine along with freshwater fish. The outdoor area overlooking the river is a nice spot to hang out before dinner sipping a cold beer at sunset. Most of the dishes come for THB50 while few non-memorable western options are more expensive; in case you want to give it a try, pizza, pasta and steaks are available.
Western and International Food
Few km out of town on highway 11, Jampha Plaza Shopping Mall is probably your best bet for more decent western food. Some of the biggest international restaurant chains can be found there along with restaurants serving good burgers, steaks and pizza.
A Korean-style barbecue mu-ka-ta where you can cook all the meat, seafood and vegetable that you want for a fixed price of THB250 is one of the most popular addresses among teenagers in town; the quality of meat and seafood is quite good and a buffet with a lot of choices of ready to eat food is included into the price. Drinks are not included and have to be paid separately.
Near Doi Khun Tan National Park
If heading to Doi Khun Tan NP, then you’ll find a couple of restaurants inside the park offering some of basic & classic Thai dishes; food is good and cheap (THB40/THB80) but don’t go too late or you’ll find everything closed.
