Places to eat in Krabi Town
Thailand is renowned for its cuisine of curries, fried rice, noodles… the list goes on. What we always recommend is branching out and sampling the local delicacies, and not always relying on what you know from home. Once of the best ways of experiencing a new culture is through the food and Krabi Town delivers!
Unlike it’s more westernised neighbour, Ao Nang, Krabi Town still retains a lot of its local and provincial feel so you can find plenty of traditional Thai dishes and Muslim menus around. Don’t worry, if you do fancy home comforts, there are places serving alternative international dishes perfect for a tired traveller.
Street food
Krabi’s markets are the first place you should start on your culinary adventure. With a large Muslim population in Krabi you can expect a range of Thai and Muslim influenced dishes around pretty much every corner.
Make a beeline for Maharaj market, between Maharaj Road and Uttarakit Road on Maharaj Soi 10 (ask any local and they’ll happily give you directions) where you’ll find a wide range of delicious tongue tingling curries and soups from pork belly to frog, for around THB40 including a heap of rice. Take a seat on one of the plastic chairs and eat with the locals for a truly authentic experience.
If you’re interested in where your food comes from, head down to the local morning market on Maharaj Soi 8 where you’ll see fresh fish caught in the early hours, as well as fresh exotic fruit, and other fresh produce. It’s a great place to get in your 5-a-day, with bananas, mangos, and guava galore!
Thai Food
One of the most popular local Thai-Muslim dishes is khao mok gai, or yellow turmeric-spiced rice with roasted chicken, and when we’re in Krabi Town we like to visit Roti Chachak, much like the locals do, to dine on this delicious dish.
You can also find biryani rice, roti with sweet banana, and khao man gai, a dish of chicken and rice with Thai-Hainanese origins. You’ll be hard pushed to spend more than THB100 for a large meal for 2. Just ask a local to point you towards Maharaj and Itsara roads and you can smell the delicious flavours on approach!
If you’re after seafood (it would be a shame not to given your coastal location) Lomlay Restaurant, down on Khong Kha, offers a menu of clams (hoy kaeng) and spicy papaya salad with salty blue crab (som tam buu maa), and another obvious option is the floating restaurant by Chao Fah pier if you really want a budget local experience.
Western and International Food
If you like your Italian then you won’t struggle to find a pizza or two in Krabi Town. One of our favourites is Viva Restaurant, on 29-Pruksa Utit Road, an open front restaurant with an authentic Italian décor and a decent wine selection to pair with your meal. We recommend the mixed bruschetta to start, followed with a delicious thin crust freshly baked pizza (both meat eaters and vegetarians have plenty to choose from), and lastly a creamy tiramisu for dessert. Just close your eyes and think of Rome…
If you’re after a lighter lunch option then Born Restaurant, down the popular Uttarakit Road, will satisfy your sandwich cravings with their freshly baked baguettes, ciabatta, and whole wheat loaves for around THB150. They also offer strong coffee should you want a pick me up during the day, too, hot or iced.
