Koh Phi Phi Beaches
Are you craving a bit of vitamin sea? Well, Koh Phi Phi is the answer. With beaches on Koh Phi Phi galore, you won’t be short of a few sandy stretches to while away the hours relaxing, reading, or looking out onto the endless horizon of the Andaman Sea.
To give you a picture of what to expect from Phi Phi’s beaches, think fine white sand, turquoise waters, and karst limestone cliffs – not to mention fresh coconuts hanging from the palm trees overhead.
Phi Phi is island paradise and beaches come with the territory. Aside from Ton Sai’s busy port-facing East and West beaches, there are plenty more beautiful and secluded bays and beaches to be discovered across both Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh which really showcase Phi Phi’s natural beauty.
Loh Dalum
Loh Dalum beach is chilled by day, crazy by night. If you’re visiting Phi Phi for the party, then most likeminded travellers visit Loh Dalum beach at least once (you can even choose a budget beach facing room along the shore, too). Lined with bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect place to stretch out if you plan on making the most of the day-long happy hours, or hire kayaks and paddle out into the bay. Loh Dalum suffered a lot of damage in the 2004 tsunami, so most of what you see today has been rebuilt from scratch.
Long Beach
Perhaps one of the island’s most popular beaches is Long Beach, along the southeast headland, facing onto Phi Phi Leh. It’s so tucked away that most people access it by longtail boat, although you can follow the seaside path across the island.
Long Beach’s sedate atmosphere is a hit with the quieter guests and those with families; a world away from the late-night party beaches. With a southwesterly view, it’s also a great beach to go for some amazing sunsets.
Laem Thong Beach
Laem Thong beach literally translates from Thai as Golden Bay – so what does that tell you? Located on the northeastern tip of Koh Phi Phi, where the more upmarket resorts and hotels have displaced the sea gypsies from times before, you can expect a relaxing atmosphere in almost total seclusion.
This is another beach you need to get a boat to if you’re not already staying in the area. The beach, overlooking the snorkelling spots of Bamboo Island, Mosquito Island, and Hin Klang, is nearly one kilometre long and it’ll feel like you have it practically to yourself.
Lana Bay
The stunning 500m stretch of sand that makes up Loh Lana, as it’s also called, can be found on the northwest coast of Phi Phi Don. Unlike the other beaches across the island, this beach is yet to be inundated with hotels or resorts – so visit now before it all changes. This quiet cove is an idyll for those wanting to escape. You can even get a private longtail boat from Loh Dalum for THB1,500 there and back. If you fancy a bit of a hike through the jungle, you can also walk to it from Phi Phi Viewpoint 2 – but bear in mind it takes a good two hours!
Maya Bay
How could we miss the iconic Hollywood hotspot off the list? Maya Bay was catapulted into stardom after the blockbuster hit The Beach came out in 1999. Although it welcomes hordes of tourists, it’s still a beautiful bay, with turquoise waters and colourful corals, framed by steep karst cliffs. Inside the bay there are in fact several beaches which can be seen at low tide, as well as the main beach. Due to its popularity, there’s now an imposed National Park entry fee of THB400 – usually included in the price of a boat tour.
