Things to Do in Koh Chang
Whilst relaxing on the beach is probably the number one activity on Koh Chang, there's still plenty to do here to keep even the most keen adventurer satisfied.
If you want to explore thoroughly and see everything, the cheapest and most convenient way is to hire a motorbike. However, if you don't feel comfortable on a bike, then staying on the central west coast will make travelling by songthaew a lot easier. When hiring a motorbike, make sure to check it over first, always wear a helmet, and don't ride on rainy days.
Diving in Koh Chang
Many of the island’s most exciting activities are centred around the ocean and the surrounding islands. Despite not quite living up to Koh Tao, the diving here is pretty good, especially at sites in Koh Rang Marine Park. There's even the opportunity to dive the wreck of the HTMS Koh Chang, but only if you are an experienced diver.
There are a number of dive schools on the island, offering both fun dives and full PADI courses. The largest and most respected company is BB divers, and they offer a good variety of courses and diving trips. Prices for dive trips start from THB3,000, whilst courses start from THB10,000. Another good choice of school is a smaller company called Scuba Dawgs.
Snorkelling & fishing in Koh Chang
If like us you are a bit nervous about diving, there are also plenty of companies offering snorkelling excursions to some of the surrounding islands. Most of these trips start around 9am and include a boat trip around 5 of the islands, snorkelling, lunch and maybe even some relaxing time on the beach. Prices range from THB600 to THB1,300 per person, although this will increase if you want to hire a private boat. Reputable companies include Kai Bae Hut Speedboat and Kon Tiki.
There are also several companies that run deep-sea fishing and kayaking excursions, but snorkelling is usually the main focus of most boat trips.
Trekking in Koh Chang
The perfect way to earn a huge and delicious seafood dinner is to spend a day trekking (and sweating!) in the vast jungle that encompasses most of Koh Chang.
The main trail goes up and over the centre of the island, connecting the Khlong Phu and Than Mayom waterfalls. Whilst you can hike it unaided, it is probably more worthwhile to hire an experienced guide who can tell you all about the island's wildlife. There are various trekking packages available, depending on your fitness and interests. The full trail is an all day excursion, normally starting around 8am and costing between THB600 and 1,000. Private treks are better if you can afford it, as groups can get quite large in high season. If you do choose to hike independently, make sure to register with the park rangers before you set off!
Exploring Koh Chang’s waterfalls
Waterfall hopping is a great way to explore the island, and combine both a motorbike trip with some jungle trekking. The main waterfall is Khlong Plu, situated at the northern end of Khlong Prao beach, but there are at least 7 other waterfalls to seek out.
However, if you don't want to explore, Khlong Plu will still fulfil all of your waterfall needs. It's stunning, easy to access, and there are even some quiet pools where you can escape the crowds – but note that the entrance fee is THB200.
Kai Bae waterfall is also a great choice for anyone wanting some peace and quiet, whilst Nang Yom is perfect if you love hiking. Other's that are worth visiting include Khlong Nonsi, Khlong Neung ( for the adventurous only!) and Keeree Phet (close to Khlong Neung, and easier to reach). Sadly, most of these waterfalls are only worth visiting during the rainy season, as you won't be able to swim during the dry season due to lack of water! In rainy season, take care as rocks may be slippery and pool currents can get very strong.
Cooking classes in Koh Chang
One of our favourite days in Thailand was spent learning how to cook Thai food in Chiang Mai. Koh Chang also has a couple of great cooking schools, that offer both half and full day classes. The best school is Blue Lagoon, in Khlong Prao, as you get to cook in an open air kitchen nestled among beautiful natural surroundings. They let you choose the dishes that you want to cook, and you get to learn all about the ingredients you use. Each class costs around THB1,000 per person and can be booked in travel offices or at the school itself.
