Chiang Rai Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts

Whether you’re a backpacker on a budget or you’re looking to treat yourself to somewhere a little more special, you’ll be sure to find the perfect accommodation in Chiang Rai. There are a lot of budget and mid range hostels and guesthouses that target travellers in the area, as well as some more luxurious resorts.

Note Whilst it’s possible to find a room when you arrive, the city can be busy with tourists and it’s often easier to book in advance. Similarly sometimes you’ll find hostels and hotels close down and are reopened with different names so it’s easier to know where you’ll be staying when you arrive.

Budget

Starting with budget and low cost accommodation, this tends to be found on the Jedyod road and around this area where you’ll find many options.

Best of all, many of the guesthouses in Chiang Rai, even on the cheaper side, will have pools and nice outdoor spaces that you can try. For less than THB600 per night, you can enjoy places like Ben Guesthouse and Akha River House, which are known for their backpacker friendly relaxed atmospheres and their friendly and welcoming staff.

Other popular options at the lower end of the price scale include Happynest Hostel, Jansom House and Rinlada House.

Tip Sometimes it can be tricky to find your hostel in Chiang Rai, with small streets, lack of signposting and sometimes inaccurate maps on popular booking websites. Try to do some advance research and take care to read reviews so you can try and avoid wandering the streets in search of the accommodation you’ve booked!

Mid-range

If you want to invest a little more to stay somewhere more upmarket, but are still on a budget, there are plenty of places to choose from that have a more mid range price bracket. These tend to cost between THB600/USD17 to THB1,600/USD45 and offer clean, spacious rooms in good locations across the city. Many will also happily help you to arrange any tours and sightseeing you want to do in Chiang Rai, and include added extras like towels and generous breakfasts.

Some of the most popular places in this price range include Baan Soontree Resort, which is much loved by families as well as backpackers, Lek House and Kong Garden View Resort. The latter is said to offer particularly good value for money and offers a free shuttle bus to the night bazaar as well as a good buffet breakfast.

Top end

Finally, there are several great options when it comes to more luxury accommodation in Chiang Rai. The Legend Resort and Spa is one of the most popular top range options, and is located on the river but not too far from the town centre. It also features a spa and some lovely poolside luxury villas, as well as a great onsite restaurant.

La Luna is another good choice in the higher price bracket, and is set is lovely gardens giving it a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Accommodation is in the style of traditional Thai villas and there is a great swimming pool, whilst the onsite restaurant is pricy but very good.

These high end hotels in Chiang Rai tend to cost from THB3,200/USD90-THB3,600/USD100 and upwards, but the rates you get will depend on the season in which you visit - it’s often possible to score a good deal if you’re visiting out of high season.

With the tourist industry continuing to grow in the area, accommodation options in Chiang Rai are always expanding and it’s a great place to spend a few days on a tight budget or to treat yourself to some nicer surroundings in northern Thailand.
