Chiang Khan Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
There is no lack of accommodation in Chiang Khan though in many cases it does not come cheap – at least it is definitely not the best value you can find in Thailand. Yet many guesthouses occupy historical wooden houses what adds to the atmosphere. Best places fill out quickly during the weekends and high season; in other periods do not forget to ask for a discount.
Budget
Located on Sri Chiang Khan Road close to the intersection with route 201 heading to Loei, Ban Hao Guesthouse (101 Sri Chiang Khan Rd) is the cheapest option available in town, and it’s just 2 minutes walking from Chai Khong Road. The old building features a handful of small and basic rooms with not a lot more than quite a hard bed, but they all come with air-con and free breakfast. The cheapest ones (THB500) rely on shared clean bathrooms, while the most expensive ones (from THB700) have a private toilette. The owners are friendly and helpful and speak enough English to provide useful information. If you want to join them in the morning ritual of alms giving, they’ll prepare food (THB50) for you to offer. The monks pass every morning in front of Ban Hao at roughly 6:30am.
On the same road but east from the crossroads Ma Loei De Guesthouse (291/1 Sri Chiang Khan Rd) is a good alternative when Ban Hao is fully booked. For the same price (THB500) you can get a fan double room with a shared toilette; the buildingitself is better than Ban Hao’s but the rooms are slightly inferior and definitely smaller and if you want an air-con you need to add THB200 extra. Breakfast is not included, either.
Mid-Range
Moving on along Chai Khong Road, Welcome Holiday (18/2 Chai Khong Road) sits at the west end of the street, close to Soi 1. It’s not the historic part of Chai Khong, but what you lose in charm you gain in privacy and quietness. They have only one type of rooms (THB800) big enough to accommodate 3 guests, even if the extra bed is actually a sofa bed more suitable for kids or somebody shorter than 170cm. The attached toilette is modern and the hot shower is separated from the rest of the bathroom. The rooms at the ground floor come with a porch while the ones on the upper floor feature a balcony from where you get a nice river view.
The Thai breakfast included into the rate is good enough and they also have a kitchen area with dishes and forks ready to use if you want to cook yourself and enjoy your dinner on the balcony. They have bicycles for hire for THB50; ask about it before paying for your room and you’ll be probably offered one for free if it’s not the high season.
Top End
Right in the heart of the Walking Street, Remember Loei Love (186/2 Moo 2, Soi 15 lang, Chai Khong Road), is old traditional building beautifully renovated inside, offering large rooms all of which are differently designed with style and taste. They all ooze that retro atmosphere which people expect to find when visiting Chiang Khan. The rooms come with an air-con, flat screen TV, WI-FI and private bathroom. A very good breakfast is included into the rate and served in the common area downstairs which is furnished with comfy couches ideal to chill out with a coffee or a beer at the end of the day. Free use of bicycle is offered to every guest, and if you’re coming from Loei with your car or motorbike a parking lot is available 20 m away from the property. Ms Kook, who is running the hotel, is very friendly and helpful and the general cosy and relaxing atmosphere of the place will make your stay extremely pleasant. Rates start at THB1200 and they also have bigger rooms with two extra futon beds ideal for families with kids.
