The names of all the airports where trials will take place have not yet been disclosed but it is already clear that the Pune airport in Maharashtra state is going to be on the list.
The screening system which is first of its kind, will be able to detect hazardous items and other threats in the baggage in an automatic mode and alert the operators immediately.
The smart baggage screening system is part of the Innovate for Airports Programme organised under the Startup India initiative. The initiative encouraged startups to offer their ideas for overall improvement of airport structure and service across the country. About 350 projects were submitted totally and out of this number eight startups were selected to implement their solutions at the airports throughout the country, smart baggage screening system being one of them.
The Baggage AI system will act as an additional step in providing security protection in the airports of India. The developer of the system, Dimensionless Technologies, ensures the AI based screening will be able to detect potentially threatening items in the baggage regardless of their small size, shapes and colour.
