Kolkata Crowned As India's Safest City

According to the latest report of the Indian National Crime Records Bureau, Kolkata is the safest city in the country. Hyderabad, the capital Telangana state, Pune and Mumbai, both in Maharashtra state, turned out to be the three next very safe cities of India.

Kolkata got the highest safety rate of 152.2 points on the scale that measures city offences and casualties for 100,000 people. It is the second year in a row that Kolkata grabs the top spot.

Yet the status of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal as the safest city does not reflect the overall performance of the state which scaled 46.1 points on the safety scale and is recognised the fourth most violence-prone state in India thanks to continuous violence that only escalated after the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections were declared.

Kolkata Police commented on the case that they appreciate the state government's efforts in providing infrastructure including creation of new police stations and upgrade of vigilance, both human and technological. All these factors make their contribution to prevention and detection of crime. Kolkata Police assured that Kolkata will continue to remain the safest city in the country.
