Thai South Is Hit by Tropical Storm Pabuk

Thai South risks to be hit by the most devastating tropical storm of all which have hit the region since 1962. A tropical storm Pabuk is expected to reach the southern provinces on January, 3. Adjust your travel plans accordingly.

The tropical storm will likely sweep up the whole south beginning from the deep southern provinces of Narathiwat and Pattani on Thursday, then move up to Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani on Friday, and probably reach as far as Chumphon and Phrachuap Khiri Khan on Saturday. The three islands of the lower part of the Gulf which are all popular tourist destinations – Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao – are in the risk zone.

Seatran car ferries and Seatran Discovery, a high-speed ferry between the islands of the Gulf and the mainland, are ceasing their operatins on Thursday afternoon. There will be no more Samui and Phangan bound ferries after 1 pm January, 3. No tickets will be sold for January, 4-5. As 2-5 m waves are expected, all smaller boats are ordered to stay ashore with bigger boats to proceed with caution till January, 5.

Torrential downpours are expected from January, 3, through January, 5 in the provinces of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarart, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang, SatunPhetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket. The temperatures may fall down some 3-5 degrees in the neighbouring provinces not affected directly by the storm.
