SilkAir to Merge into Singapore Airlines

SilkAir, a regional airline and a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, expects a major facelift as a huge improvement program terminating in the company's merge into SIA, to take place.

It was announced that over USD100 mln will be invested in the upgrade of the cabins. Business class will be equipped with new lie-flat seats while both business and economy class passengers will be able to enjoy state-of-the-art inflight entertainment systems installed into seat backs. After the upgrade – which is expected to start in 2020 due to the time necessary for supply, installation and certification of the new equipment – is done, SilkAir will merge into SIA.

SilkAir was founded in 1989 as Tradewinds Charters and initially focused on holiday destinations around Asia including Pattaya, Phuket, Hat yai, Kuantan and Tioman. Renamed in 1992, the company enlarged considerably the geography of its flights and since then used the Singapore Changgi Airport as its hub. Now the company own a fleet of 34 aircrafts and flies to 53 destinations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thaialnd, Myanmar, Cambodia, India, Japan and China. 

The merger is one of the steps undertaken in the frame of Singapore Airlines' transformation program targeting at providing growth opportunities to the Group.
