Heavy seas and storms lash southern Thailand

Rainstorms and high seas have been battering the southern Thai peninsula and Gulf of Thailand islands over the past few days. The weather forecasters say the rain is likely to last throughout the weekend in provinces from Suratthani southwards.

National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department boss Chayapol Thitisak said local authorities in provinces from Chumphon to Phattalung and Yala had reported flooding. News reporters in the gulf coastal areas say waves were up to three metres high yesterday.

Floods swamped the runway at Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport and led to the facility’s closure yesterday too. Director Suksawat Sukawanno issued a statement saying the airport would be closed for two days at least because electrical supply units had been damaged by the floods.

In Hua Hin, beach café proprietors shifted their fixtures and fittings to the back of the beach while municipal officials posted red warning flags along the coast as far as Khao Takiap. 12GO ASIA says for the time being travellers catching flights, buses, trains and ferries need to allow extra time to reach departure stations.
