Bangkok Loy Krathong Festival 2017 to be a quiet one

The governor of Bangkok has issued an order saying today’s Loy Krathong Festival needs to be quieter than usual. Aswin Kwanmuang told media sources earlier this week the funeral rites for King Bhumibol Adulyadej had only just finished and the festivities needed to be low key out of respect.

Low key equates to a ban on fireworks and the launch of the famous khom loy sky lanterns. To show the municipality means business, governor Kwanmuang stated offenders risked fines of up to THB60,000 and a possible jail term.

Spokesperson Urewan Taonoi says people will be allowed to launch krathongs as usual. She noted that all the parks and Chao Phraya riverside zones normally used for this activity will be open. These include Lumphini Park. The parks will open until 24:00 to ensure all comers have time to float their krathongs.

12GO ASIA says Thai authorities have asked people to use krathongs made from bio-degradable products to avoid clogging up waterways. The team also notes that Chiang Mai might be the best location to see khom loy sky lanterns as the authorities there say this activity will be allowed this evening and tomorrow evening.
