Flights to Chiang Mai rescheduled for Yi Peng Festival

The director of Chiang Mai International Airport says flights this weekend are being rescheduled to allow the annual Loy Krathong Festival to take place. Monthanik Rakngam told reporters a total of 20 international flights and 58 domestic ones had been cancelled.

The director added that arrival and departure times for another 26 international services and 53 domestic ones had been altered. He finished off by saying even though the timetables had been altered drastically this would not affect passengers as airlines knew about the changes a long time ago and tweaked their schedules accordingly.

12GO ASIA says Loy Krathong, or Yi Peng as it is called in Chiang Mai, is one of Thailand’s most colourful festivals. In Chiang Mai, the launch of khom loy sky lanterns is a surreal spectacle and one of the key reasons to visit during Loy Krathong.

Khom loy are the reason for the flight cancellations as they pose a danger to aircraft landing and taking off at the airport. Chiang Mai municipal officials say this year’s khom loy can only be launched on Friday and Saturday between 19:00 and 01:00.
