Chiang Mai urban rail system gets thumbs up

The deputy-director of Thailand’s transport division told reporters last week that Chiang Mai and another two popular tourist destinations will get light rail lines. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will work out routes, budgets and all the other specifics needed to get new rail systems off the ground.

Once this has been done, the draughts will be submitted to the government for final approval. The timeline as it stands at present is government approval in early 2019 and construction commences the following year.

If this schedule is followed, Chiang Mai’s as well as Phuket’s rail systems could be welcoming their first passengers in 2023. Phang Nga is the third location in the plan, but the MRTA did not specify a construction start date for that system.

The MRTA director did not give specific details on the exact system Chiang Mai would be getting. In the initial proposals tabled at public debates there were two choices. One was to put the whole system underground and the other was to lay the lines on existing roads.

12GO ASIA does not sell tickets for travel on Chiang Mai’s urban bus routes, taxis, songthaews or tuktuks. What we offer is multiple travel solutions when travelling from locations as far apart as Singapore, Phuket, Mandalay and Shenzhen.
