Jellyfish alert for Jomtien Beach and Gulf of Thailand

Municipal authorities in Pattaya and Jomtien say swimmers need to be careful of jellyfish drifting in the Gulf of Thailand. The warning comes after tides washed smacks of jellyfish onto Jomtien Beach over the weekend.

The sight of thousands upon thousands of thousands of small two or three centimetre jellyfish greeted beachgoers. The jellyfish were washed up on the tide-line of a two-kilometre swath of the beach.

A statement released by health officers says jellyfish stings generally cause irritation, but are occasionally quite painful. It adds that if people do get stung they need to treat it with vinegar first and then seek medical assistance.

Beach vendors and local residents say heavier seas during the annual June to September monsoon season wash jellyfish ashore. Many of these people joined forces over the weekend to pick up the jellyfish.

12GO ASIA’s travel specialists say that while the sea is off limits for a few days, tourists in Jomtien will still have plenty to keep them occupied. Attractions in the locality range from world-class theme parks to championship golf courses. Quite a few of the hotels in the area also have their own swimming pools.
