Red songtheaw taxi union in Chiang Mai announces new regulations

The union of red songthaew taxi operators in Chiang Mai has announced a new set of regulations for drivers. The more than 2,300 red songthaews plying the streets of the northern Thai city will have to be reregistered as commercial vehicles by 30 August.

The Nakorn Lanna Cooperative says drivers will also not be allowed to take passengers to districts outside the city’s middle ring road. The cooperative’s statement said that the maximum fare cabbies will be able to charge is THB30 per passenger or THB200 for a private hire.

Drivers are required to attend training sessions at which they will be allocated Quick Response (QR) codes. The drivers will then post the QRs on their songthaews. This will allow passengers to scan and rate the drivers on a central database.

Chiang Mai City News reported that the first batch of 400 drivers will attend the mandatory training session over the next week. 12GO ASIA notes that songthaews are found everywhere in Chiang Mai and are a convenient and economical means of travelling around or getting to the airport, railway station or the Arcade Bus Station.
