Board of trustees defers entry fee hike at Yangon Shwedagon Pagoda

The board of trustees at Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda has deferred a planned visitor entry fee increase for six months. A MMK2,000 hike in the charge was due to come into effect on 1 June 2017 but has been put back as the trustees did not provide the correct notice period about the change.

The board announced the price increase from MMK8,000 to MMK10,000 early last month. The Myanmar government bureau in charge of national monuments and historic sites said the increase could not be implemented as the board was obliged to give six months’ notice.

The government directive was a response to a complaint made by the Myanmar Travel Association that they had not been given enough time to incorporate the extra costs into their tour programmes. The association’s May Myat Mon Win noted that before making arbitrary decisions, stakeholders needed to be brought into the loop and this applied at  Shwedagon and other tourist locations in the country.

Shwedagon Pagoda is the most revered religious site in Myanmar and an absolute must-see for people visiting Yangon. The former capital is still the main gateway to the country and 12GO ASIA offers advanced ticketing services for flights from locations such as Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.
