Downpours spur Don Mueang Airport to set up flood control plans

The president of Airports of Thailand says measures to deal with any flooding at Don Mueang Airport are already in place. Responding to claims the Bangkok airport is likely to be flooded this year, Nitinai Sirismatthakarn says workers have already set up 14 water-drainage pumps.

The president said the pumps’ combined water drainage capacities were 75,000 metres³ an hour. He continued by saying engineers had already mapped out channels to drain the wastewater off.

To the east of Don Mueang, water will be funnelled into Klong Thanon Canal. A reservoir on the north side will act as a conduit to underground pipes across Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and into Klong Prem Prachakorn Canal.

Airport authorities also plan to control the flow of the floodwater and ensure drainage channels do not overflow and swamp adjacent neighbourhoods. Rounding off the planned steps to deal with flooding, Mr Sirismatthakarn said staff would be monitoring all parts of the airport and would fire up the pumps if needed.

Don Mueang Airport is the main hub for both domestic and international budget airlines. 12GO ASIA sells tickets for flights from Don Mueang to destinations including Chiang Mai, Krabi, Hat Yai, Langkawi and Mandalay.
