Songkran water fights begin a day early in Chiang Mai

Tourists in Chiang Mai kicked off their Songkran Festival celebrations a day early on Wednesday. In several locations around the city, revellers armed themselves with water-pistols and buckets of water to soak passers-by.

The fun continued yesterday with the moat around the Old City the centre of action for both Thais and foreigners. With temperatures above 35°C for most of the day, getting a soaking was not too unpleasant an experience for most.

With some roads closed for the celebrations and others crowded with water combatants, driving around the main city areas was slow and there were lots of minor traffic snarl-ups. Songkran finishes tomorrow and, apart from in a few locations, water throwing ends at the same time.

Tourists travelling to and from Chiang Mai as well other major cities and holiday destinations in Thailand over the weekend will find roads and public transport busy as Thais head back to their homes and places of work. 12GO ASIA advises making online reservations if travelling over the next few days.
