Pattaya to rein in beach umbrella operators

Pattaya council officials have outlined proposals which will see the operations of beach umbrella vendors subjected to a whole new set of regulations. The most significant from the vendors’ point of view is that they will be required to remove deckchairs and umbrellas from the city beach on Tuesday evenings and not put them back until Friday.

The whole of Pattaya’s beach from the Dusit Thani Hotel down to as far as the entrance to Walking Street is usually covered with the shade parasols. Pattaya municipality says the two-day ban is all part and parcel of a grand plan to return public beaches to the public.

Other key points in the plan will limit the size of the plots the umbrellas are allowed to cover and also force the vendors to fold them away when the sun-beds underneath are unoccupied. The final stipulation will be that the 118 vendors will have to draw lottery tickets once a year to find out which section of the beach they will be working on.

The golden beach is one of the jewels in the crown of Pattaya’s tourism draws. Pattaya is around 140kms from Bangkok and 105kms from Suvarnabhumi Airport. 12GO ASIA provides a full range of transport solutions for the journeys.
