New market to float into Phnom Penh

The CEO of a Cambodian development company says a new floating market will break ground in Phnom Penh in two month’s time. Sky Land boss Srey Chanthorn told media sources the Thai-style floating market will be set up at a 50-acre site in the northwest district of Vihear Sour.

He said Sky was collaborating with a Thai developer on the project and it would be something akin to the popular floating markets in Bangkok, Pattaya and the one depicted in our image. The Mekong River runs around the west side of the market site. The total area also includes car parks and around 60 per cent will be allocated to boats and rafts.

Mr Chanthorn explained that the two partners planned to put together a tourist attraction good enough to rival Thailand’s floating markets and also the country’s other main attraction, the temples of Angkok Wat in Siem Reap. He said the market would incorporate traditional Khmer longboats.

Boat vendors will sell a full portfolio of Cambodian food and beverage items plus the wonderful range of handicrafts and souvenirs the country is famed for. The 12GO ASIA travel team says a floating market will add to the delights of Phnom Penh and ensure it remains an essential stopover on the Southeast Asian tourism trail.
