One of the best things about bus travel is that you can almost tailor-make your trip adjusting it to your requirements for privacy and comfort. Pros of Bus Travel
- Bus is the best choice to get to destinations that are not connected by rail or planes. The network of buses often covers almost the whole country, and their routes are well and long-established.
- Opposite to air travel and sometimes rail travel, taking a bus does not require arriving at the bus station much in advance. Check-in, even on international routes, does not take much time. Luggage allowances are usually very traveller-friendly, and the fee for extra luggage, if limits are set, is normally not very high.
- Bus tickets can be more affordable compared to air or fast train tickets. There is always a choice of ticket classes for all pockets. Cheaper standard options may be a bit slow and do not offer top comfort, but anyway acceptable and bring you to your destination. On longer routes, toilets or toilet stops as well as snacks, water, and sometimes toiletries and blankets are almost always included in the price.
- If you are ready to spend more, some VIP coaches offer seating comparable to business class on a plane with wide soft reclining seats, blankets, fewer passengers, and many other perks to make your trip a pleasant journey.
Cons of Bus Travel
- Newer intercity bus terminals are very often located out of the city close to bigger highways to allow buses to avoid city congestion. Unfortunately, it may create extra challenges for travellers, too. Getting to such a terminal may be a problem as in some destinations there are restrictions on vehicles allowed to enter the terminal, and you will have to use special carriers to get there. This results in higher costs as prices may be inflated. - Buses are probably the means of transport which runs out of schedule more often than trains or planes. - Travelling on certain routes or during the most popular periods may require advanced booking. Bear in mind that it is not always possible to show up at the bus station and hop on the next bus – tickets may well be all sold out, so organize your trip accordingly.

Maddie BAfter receiving exceptional service on all of our transport whilst in Vietnam for the past month, this journey was disappointing. We paid extra for a 3hr “luxury” bus and ferry, but we were put on a standard bus and took the speedboat instead of the ferry. The journey ended up taking over 4 hours instead of 3 and the bus was so busy that as a couple we were unable to sit next to each other. We supposedly arrived late due to the weather, but I am struggling to see how the weather impacted the time of the journey as we left everywhere on time and did not have to make any diversions as far as I am aware. I instead think that the trip was falsely advertised to us - we would have chosen the cheaper option if we knew that the journey would have been like this. We did not receive the trip we booked.

Fabian BChanged our bus in Hanoi, first bus driver didn’t inform us about anything, probably because he didn’t speak English, bus had some beeping all night and he also drove pretty fast in bad weather and on winding road, so we couldn’t sleep a lot. But that was another company, as soon as Goodmorning Catba took over, we were informed about every stop, change of vehicles and brought directly to our destination.

We also had to change limousine twice. The first time, we were almost left behind due to poor communication. The second time, we were put on the wrong bus and had to turn back and change vehicles again.
Throughout the entire journey, there was a general lack of clear communication from the drivers about what was happening, which made the experience confusing and stressful.

We had originally booked the 2.30pm bus, but the night before our bus we got a call from the operator telling us that the bus would be delayed and that we had to change our booking timing and there were only 2 timings available (10am or 1.30pm), so we changed to the 1.30pm bus. Deleted UI book a transfer from 3 PM and at 2 PM they texted me they want to pick me up right now and otherwise have to cancel the trip. It just doesnt make any sense to me - why was the transfer listed for 3 PM if it's not possible. I booked it a day before.

Sao Viet should really improve their safety policy and hire more professional staff .

But when I booked I chose to be dropped off at my hotel in Hanoï and unfortunately they said that this was not possible and that the office won’t change it on the website. I took this ride especially because I wanted to be dropped off at my hotel, but instead I had to walk. False information!

Maria POrganised journey however I had to change 3 buses for the journey Cat Ba- Sapa which made the journey long and tiring. It would be more convenient if the bus from Cat Ba entered the ferry and then continued to Hanoi instead of changing so many times. The speedboat was indeed fast but I had to carry my suitcase through stairs to get in and out of the boat with little help provided (I had a medium sized suitcase). Once in Hanoi had to wait for an hour until the bus departure which is okay I guess as you get time for lunch.

The worse thing was that I felt very unsafe on our way back. It seemed like the bus driver was either drunk or very distracted by his phone which was placed in front of him and played videos. He couldn't keep a straight line on the railway which was very unsettling. Moreover, when we got off the ferry, he already started driving when not everyone was on the bus. That is very rude and discomforting.

We got picked up directly at our apartment, drove with a bus (also a short stop for snacks and toilet usage) to the harbour, onto a ferry without the bus, entered a new bus on Cat Ba Island and brought directly to our new destination location on the island.
The communication regarding the pickup point and time could be clearer, as you can enter an adress during the booking process, but this never appeared in the confirmation. We contacted the operator and clarified pickup time and place - then everything worked smoothly.

Olivia CSeats are super small and claustrophobic compared to over 12 other vip busses I've been on because they do 3 rows but it's the same price as the actual nice vip bus. Bus left on time but we arrived very late due to unnecessary stops and bad driving. Constant honking and unnecessary bumps not taken with caution so no ability to sleep. Mosquitoes in bus biting you the whole time. No wifi like advertised. Overall very unenjoyable experience.
