The majority of the accommodation in Medan isn’t all that conveniently located unfortunately. While most of the action occurs around the Medan Railway Station, the inns, hotels and guesthouses are predominantly scattered around Jalan SM Raja a little distance away. This isn’t the end of the world by any means and catching a ride on a local becak to and from your accommodation can be easily achieved for about IDR 10,000 to IDR 20,000 per trip. Fortunately, we’ve made a list of many well-located accommodation options to make your life a little easier. From bargain, basic rooms with cold-water showers all the way to the well-known Marriott Hotel with its luxurious amenities and tasteful décor, every traveller can find a suitable room for the night. Below is our list of recommended accommodation in Medan, from the dirt-cheap, to the mid-range, all the way to the swanky and swish.
Budget accommodation in Medan
1. Sultan Homestay
This budget accommodation is cheap, basic and comfortable. If you’re looking for a friendly and welcoming host, an inexpensive place to crash for the night and a clean room, Sultan Homestay is an excellent choice. Located 50 meters from the Grand Mosque Al-Mashun, this area is bustling with other travelers and scrumptious eateries and is the ideal meeting ground for making friends with other like-minded travelers. For those looking for a standard private room with shared bathrooms, room rates start from IDR 80,000 for the night and increase gradually. For travelers looking to save their rupiah even further, dormitory rooms are available for a dirt-cheap IDR 40,000 for the night. These rates even include a simple breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

2. Pondok Wisata Angel
Friendly, well-priced and highly recommended. A classic backpacker joint, Pondok Wisata Angel is hands-down one of the better budget options in town. The room options at this backpacker’s range from basic, fan-cooled rooms with cold-water showers, all the way to air-conned rooms with TV and decent, hot water showers. Rooms come with an optional sun terrace and the occasional view of the sprawling city below, as well as an onsite restaurant that offers free Wi-Fi. Bike rental at Pondok is offered for travelers who crave independent travel and the freedom to roam at their leisure. Room rates for a single bed in a mixed or same-sex room are IDR 80,000; a twin room with two single beds, IDR 130,000; and a Deluxe Double Room for IDR 150,000.

3. Dazhong Backpackers Hostel
This hostel is fairly new in town and is situated above an English school where volunteering is an option for those looking for free board and lodging. The dormitory rooms are clean, and the location near to the train station is fantastic. The dormitory offers its guests a fully equipped communal kitchen to whip up one’s own meals, a garden to relax in, a lovely rooftop seating area, and an onsite restaurant serving Western and Asian dishes. Air-conned rooms, free wi-fi and a host that goes over and beyond the call of duty for his guests, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We especially loved the bustling market across the street and the cheap, delicious local dinners. Rooms start at IDR 100,000 for the night.

4. Amelia 2 Guesthouse
With the recent addition of Amelia 3 Guesthouse, it’s evident to see that this accommodation is setting a name for itself amongst budget-conscious travelers. Simple, clean rooms, and friendly and conservative hosts are the order of the day here at Amelia’s and with the private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi, there’s very little to complain about. Located near to many local restaurants, this guesthouse is ideal for those who wish to explore Medan’s culinary tourism more thoroughly during their stay in the city. A standard double room starts at IDR 100,000 for the night, while a double twin-room goes for IDR 150,000.

Mid-range accommodation in Medan
5. MM Capsule Hostel Medan
Probably our favourite mid-range accommodation in Medan. We loved the quirky and artsy interiors, leafy garden and modern amenities. Each capsule comes furnished with a comfy bed and TV while some include a private self-catering kitchenette. All rooms offer shared bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and a delicious American breakfast. Rates begin at IDR 160,000 per person.

6. Griya 24 Kost & Homestay
Still well within the budget prices, the service at this homestay is what sets it apart from all the rest. The wonderful and welcoming hosts at this accommodation were probably our favourite part of our stay at Griya 24 and with the superb location, travellers really can’t go wrong booking a room here for the night. Scrupulously spotless bedrooms and delicious and beautifully presented meals are just a few of the examples where Griya Homestay sets itself apart from the rest. Fan-cooled rooms, private bathrooms, a balcony, Wi-Fi, free toiletries, and as well as complimentary hot beverages and water are all available too. Rates begin at IDR 150,000 for a single room and IDR 175,000 for a double room and all room rates include a scrumptious meal.

7. Carolina Transit
Excellently located close to a range of restaurants and some of Medan’s better-known sights and attractions, Carolina Transit is a great option for those seeking comfort, convenience and relaxation. Each room comes furnished with a seating area, desk and wardrobe while others include a lovely balcony. This makes ordering a room-service breakfast all the more comfortable during your stay. The 24-hour front desk is terrific at organising any day trips or excursions that you may wish to go on as well as any transport services you may require. Room rates are between IDR 250,000 and IDR 300,000 for the night with a delicious breakfast thrown in too.

8. K77 Guesthouse Medan
This guesthouse provides its guests with a 24-hour front desk, an onsite restaurant and a snack bar. All rooms are tastefully furnished with a flat-screen TV, minibar and comfortable seating area. Daily cleaning services, order-in breakfast service and laundry all make your stay at K77 as comfortable and pleasant as possible. 9. JV Marriott Hotel Medan

One of our absolute favourite hotels in Medan, any stay at Aryaduta is an absolute treat. Six dining options, an outdoor pool, fitness centre and impeccable service, this hotel is worth every penny for travellers looking to be pampered and looked after. Gorgeous interiors, plush furniture and pristine attention to detail, this hotel gets our hearty vote of approval and a big thumbs up. Rates start at 1,000,000 for a night and include one of the best buffet breakfasts we’ve ever had.
