Probably one of the best bus companies overall. However, the toilet didn’t flush and there was no water available for hand washing, which could be improved.

Our bus ride was a cabin 22 from Phang Nha to Hanoi. It was supposed to leave at 11:30 pm and arrive 8:30 am. This would have allowed for a good number of hours of sleep and not arrive too early. Instead we got a text saying the bus was now leaving at 10:40 pm. We had to get ourselves ready earlier but we made the bus. The bus was operated by Duy Thanh company. It had comfortable pods and I am 191 cm (6’3”) and was able to just fit fully stretched out. The problem was that there was no toilet on board and no proper toilet breaks were taken. The bus continued all the way to Minh Binh to drop off passengers and a few of us needed to use the toilet but there was no toilet available at that stop at 3:00am, and the driver said to use the alleyway next to some closed food carts. The place was crawling with many rats and just wasn’t useable. He looked at me like what’s the problem. I had to beg him to take us to a proper washroom but he looked like we were bothering him to ask for the most basic of needs. We drove for another 5 minutes and we went to a location that was on the side of the road but was dark and locked. The drivers assistant tried to find a washroom but what he found was dark space with a toilet and chickens around it. One of the girls used it and ran out screaming when she discovered chickens around her. This was ridiculous. There were no further stops until about 5:30 am where the bus stopped in the middle of the highway to put us 6 remaining passengers into a car to drive us the rest of the way to Hanoi. We arrived at 6:30 am. A time where nothing was yet open in Hanoi and not ideal time to arrive. I had only slept a maximum of 2-3 hours on what was supposed to be a 9 hour trip. Other than the comfortable bus, the rude driver, the lack of proper toilet breaks, and leaving at a time that was not the original scheduled time, this was an awful experience for a overnight bus trip.

They dropped us off at a different location then mentioned in the booking (30min away from the address, by car) We left half an hour early and still arrived 2 hours late. The phone charging station wasn’t working. One place where they dropped us off for a toilet break was soo dirty. You really could not go there.

I was at the pickup point on time, yet the bus driver called me angrily asking where I am and saying I should immediately rush to the bus. Turns out he was not coming to the bus station, but was parking down the road of the bus station. So he was in the wrong place, yet he was calling me angrily. I did spend a little more money on the ticket to get a better and more comfortable bus. The bus didn’t look anything like on the ticket. Also, we arrived at the destination 2 hours early so that I had to be there in the middle of the night. Overall everything would be fine, but the bus drivers are one of the rudest people I’ve met. Definitely didn’t expect that in a country where all the other people are so kind and helpful. It’s a shame that the bus organizations dull the experience of Vietnam travelers!

Three different vehicles, inexplicably made a stop 15 mins outside of drop off point in old quarter to transfer to smaller vehicle that never arrived. We had to get a grab instead. Advise another operator.

I originally booked for 130am and the lady who’s connected with the bus (tiep Nguyen)told be that the bus is arriving early and there aren’t any 130am bus available so she wanted me to come at 12am instead.I already was irritated bc if there aren’t any 130 buses available why even have it posted? Then when I did arrive at 12 she left me outside while there were rats running around and the bus was 30-45mins late…She was unprofessional and didn’t communicate in person.Instead she left me outside with the rats until the bus came…

The bus was 2 hours late, and when the bus arrived there were no room for our backpacks in the storage under the bus, so we had to take it inside. If was unclear where to sleep, but luckily there were room enough for everyone. At Nihn Binh we had to get into another bus. But we still came half an hour early, so that was nice.

Bus was comfy enough but didn’t give us any information the entire trip. Dropped us in a random place and made us change to 4 different cars without any information and arrived to our hostel an hour and a half late

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
