Richard PViceroy II is a great heritage luxury train carriage, a fun way to travel through Sri Lanka. The scenery from Kandy to Ella is spectacular and well worth the trip. Our favourite part of the journey was actually going into the other carriages where we could experience the “real” Sri Lanka train and benefit from the open windows and doors for the breeze and photos (Viceroy II has small sealed windows with AC)... if we did it again we would just buy a normal 2nd class ticket. But ViceroyII does exactly what is promised. Oh we were an hour late too... but who cares!

Brendan CThe train was late and got later, such that the last hour was in darkness. The exterior of the coach was shabby to say the least and appears to be under renovation.
Unfortunately the windows are ridiculously small so if you are on the "wrong side" of the carriage your view is negligible. We got off and joined the main train in second class and had a far better view all around! If you want to sit in comfort and chat without concern for the beautiful scenery then perfect! However, if you want to appreciate the wonderful landscapes then book the "cheap seats"!

Eline VThe Viceroy II wagon had comfortable chairs, and we were given two cups of coffe/tee each during the ride. The amazing view of beautiful green tea plantations, hill landscape and small Sri Lankan villages really makes the trip memorable. The Viceroy II tickets were more expensive than other alternatives, but worth the money if you ask me. 4 out og 5 stars because the AC actually made the journey a bit cold ???? But both my partner and I would absolutely recommend a trip!!

Jacqueline LThe train was very late arriving at Peradenya and got later and later so the part of the journey which was important to us was in the dark - we saw nothing of the wonderful scenery we had heard so much about and eventually arrived at Ella 4 hours late at 10.30 pm. The driver had waited for hours for us to arrive and, when we arrived at our Hotel, it was too late for Dinner, which had been booked. All in all, a very disappointing and disastrous trip.

The train was comfortable and the staff were lovely; provided tea and coffee and refreshments were available for purchase. The car was equiped with wifi and was very comfortable. The trip itself was stunning and the countryside was absolutely beautiful. This is a must-do in Sri Lanka!

Carina SA train up ahead broke down and had to be retrieved with a new locomotive. The staff handled that situation excellently. We had to change the train set two hours from the destination but we got the same class we paid for. It’s an great way to travel, full service as well. Even a place where you can smoke during the ride!

Kathryn HUnfortunately the viceroy carriage had needed to be sent for repairs but the replacement was extremely good and the trip was one of our highlights. The staff were very helpful and pointed out places of interest. Refunds were processed effectively. I would book again.

Milena LReally pleasant travel experience. We took a first class train Kandy to Colombo and this was 100x better. Large comfy seats, old school class. The carriage is old and you can tell but it’s function is not impacted. The train is of course super slow and at times very wobbly, but that’s how you can enjoy the breathtaking views

Giovanna CWe took this train after reading it was one of the most beautiful ones and that was true! The scenery is beautiful!!! The carriage is so pretty inside, outside could use paint as it is not at all as in the photos. On the negative side the train picked us up almost one hour late, and we lost 2 more hours on the way so all in all it took almost double the time (around 6hrs). Just beware not to have flights or anything booked immediately after, just in case.

Katie AWe took the VIP carriage as they were the last tickets available to pre-book. The guy who worked in the carriage was very accommodating and the train itself was definitely better quality than the regular trains and very comfortable. Lunch is not included in the price so bring snacks if you don’t want to pay a premium for what is available on board. We were quite happy with beer, coffee and potato chips though. We arrived 1 hour later but that’s to be expected.

Nirela SWe loved everything about the carnage really. I’m rating it 4 star only because the windows can’t open and you really can’t see the scenery and take same pictures either . But everything else was perfect. Very comfortable, WiFi, a bar to order drinks, no food though but we managed to order some sort of lunch boxes from one of the stations.

Tyler HWe were expecting a little more luxury from the Viceroy II carriage and more than one cup of tea for the entirety of the journey. We had to pay for our 2nd cup of tea, which given the cost of the ticket we expected to be complimentary. However, it was a scenic journey and we're glad we had the experience.
