We got picked up early, but because the hadn’t sold enough seats we had to wait till they did and ended up leaving an hour early. A couple stops very early in the trip but nothing for like the last 4 hours. Someone was throwing up and our driver wouldn’t pull over. Pay the extra little bit and take the bus

We got a message on what’s app telling us that the shuttle would be late, because other passengers flight were delayed. In the end, the shuttle arrived 40mins earlier than planned (6pm without getting late). They told us we had to wait until 7h30pm to take the shuttle, or pay an extra 300P to leave in time. We argued. Finally, we left around 6h30pm because we talked for a while with the travel coordinator. The shuttle was not like advertised at all, very uncomfortable. We arrived around 12h40am, the ride was also way longer than advertised. I would have asked for a refund, but 12Go Asia make you pay instantly, without refund…

Poor communication. No message to say what time we would be picked up. Our departure time was 9:30am and arrival at destination due for 14:30pm. We arrived around 16:30 Tried to squish us in the back but we moved seat. They ended up squeezing 4 locals onto three seats at the back which I knew they would do so we avoided the seats. Lots of random stops with no communication as to why we are stopping, if we can get out and get food or go to the toilet. Very fast driving

They advertise the time the van should travel but they have to wait until it is full. Meaning they will let you wait for a long time.

The drive itself was okay and felt save. But.. They picked me up at my accomodation at 10:30. But before the actually drive to el nido starts we were waiting at least one hours because another guest was late. So we were of course in el nido 1,5 hours later then expected. Another thing is, that they charged me 500 Php for my suitcase. I knew, that they probably charge me a bit for overweight (maximum 10 kg are allowed) but 500 was quiet a lot and other guests didn't needed to pay extra fees. It was just me. Thats not fair. One other guest has a backpack with more weight than me and didn't need to pay. They should charge everyone with overweight or no one. But not some people yes and some people no.

The driver arrived on time and the communication between myself and one of the operators was excellent - she contacted me via WhatsApp, told me exactly where to go and when the driver would be there. The drive to El Nido was long but we did get a pit stop to use the toilet and buy food and drinks. The standard of driving was pretty crazy and pretty nerve-wracking at times but we made it in one piece. We had a full bus from the start but the driver picked someone else up along the way who sat in the back with 3 others - it looked like a very tight squeeze and pretty uncomfortable. When making the booking, I was asked where I wanted to be dropped off so I named the accommodation I was staying at in El Nido town. We were all under the impression that we were getting dropped off at our accommodation. A Filipino family who were on the bus got dropped off at theirs first just outside of town and then shortly after the driver told the rest of us to get out too and that we had to go the rest of the way via tuktuk which cost an additional 150 pesos. None of us were expecting to have to pay an extra fee as we thought we’d arranged to get dropped off at our accommodations and this wasn’t mentioned at all during the ride. Something to be mindful of when booking.

We were picked up at our hotel and dropped at the location stated on the booking. The driver took two bathroom breaks, which was needed on a nearly six hour drive. However, the van was very crammed and not comfortable. We arrived nearly an hour after what was stated on the booking, even though the driver drove quite fast. The communication was also not great, the person behind the contact number could not even tell me the van license plate the morning of our booking and the van ended up being branded by a different company, which made things confusing. The driver made no effort to speak English and other passengers had to translate for us how long the breaks were etc.

It was a good ride. Going via Van is the fastest way from Puerto Princesa to El Nido Center. Airport and Hotel pickup are available. Yes the car is stacked with people but everyone still has his own seat. The legroom could be a little bit better but suffices.

The driver used 2 more hours than anticipated to drive til El Nido, because he had to stop the vehicle so many times. He was also smoking weed while driving, which caused the ride to be very bumpy and not that comfortable.

Travelling by van essentials

  • Ensure to check carefully from where your van departs. In many cases vans are stationed not at the city main bus station but elsewhere. Individual van operators may have their own van stops located anywhere, and one and the same operator may sell tickets to their vans from different stops. If you are planning a bus-van connection, be sure you understand where to catch your van as it is easy to assume that vans leave from the same station where buses arrive. No, it is not necessarily so!
  • There are different types of vans accommodating from 9 to 15 or more passengers. While on certain routes you have no alternative, on others you can choose. The rule of thumb – fewer seats mean more leg space and more comfort. As well as more money for your ticket. But this is probably the case when it is worth investing into your seat a bit more.
  • Vans accommodating more passengers are often cramped and do not provide any additional space for your luggage. In many cases your ticket will include only one piece of luggage, often with limited weight. If you travel with huge suitcases or backpacks you may want – or even need – to buy an extra seat for your luggage. Before booking an extra seat for your luggage though do check with the operator if they allow it. If you did buy a separate seat for your luggage, and the driver during the way tries to pick up an extra passenger to put on a “vacant” seat, insist on right to use it as you paid for it.
  • There are obviously no on board toilets in vans but if your journey lasts over two or three hours there will normally be one or more bathroom stop(s) enroute. During the bathroom stop, take a note of your van number plate when you get off. It will make it easier for you to find the van among similar vehicles and in an unhappy case (hypothetically!) of van leaving without you, you can at least report it to the operator.
  • Van drivers are notorious for their driving style. Though many companies enforce strict speed limits on their vehicles they are often not observed. This is probably a major downside of van travel in some countries. Anyway, if speed limits are violated do not be shy to ask the driver to go slower. Normally there will be an information plate with the telephone numbers to call if your driver violates traffic rules – report each such case without hesitation. Also, do leave your review if not satisfied with the service to warn other travellers.
  • It is compulsory to use belts for all the van passengers. Even if your driver does not insist on it, use the belt for your own safety. Belts are sometimes fixed behind your seat – do not hesitate to release them and use as they are intended to be used.
  • Many vans do not have scheduled departures but depart when full. Sometimes waiting periods can be long, especially if you happen to come immediately after the previous van has departed or just in the end of the day when there are not so many passengers. Always make sure you understand whether your ticket is for a scheduled trip or otherwise. Normally operators who allow online booking of their tickets, provide scheduled service meaning your van will depart on time no matter how many passengers show up for the trip.
