Siem Reap to Phnom Penh Destination Reviews

CD
I had booked two upper sleeper seats on the night bus, but when we arrived our seats were already taken. Thankfully, the staff quickly found us another place. However, the alternative was a double bed without a window. Overall, we appreciated the staff’s prompt assistance and the bus was on time.

I have used the Giant Ibis VIP with three seats across in the recent past - three trips PP-SR-PP-SR. These have been great. Good wifi, able to work on my lap top. But this was the regular VIP bus - 4 seats across - much less comfortable, impossible to work, and a crowded trip. Not recommended. Pay the extra 6 bucks and go on the 23$ ride.

Several stops during the night (lights on, noise,...). Besides that, we had a good and rapid trip :)

Everything was great. The only comment is that the operator and car wasn’t matching the one was initially booked and that was a bit confusing

Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, taxi SUV 4pax, SIMA Car, Dec 2, 2025
A
The bus was expected to reach our destination at 11. We got there at 1.30AM which would have been fine if we were informed. Instead, we made multiple stops with absolutely no communication, with the drivers stopping off for food, doing some sort of deliveries and repairs. At one point we stopped every 6 minutes for an hour. This would have been fine if we were actually informed but instead we were left not knowing just sitting on a standstill vehicle ( at one point we stopped for 50 minutes with no idea when we would leave). To top it off, we had baby cockroaches and adult cockroaches in our bed bunker and also the hallway.

Is the water in Phnom Penh safe?

Tap water in Phnom Penh is generally not considered safe for drinking. Local authorities and health experts recommend using bottled water for drinking and cooking. Bottled water is widely available throughout the city and is relatively inexpensive.

For those staying longer, using a water filtration system is also an option to ensure safe drinking water. Avoid consuming ice in drinks from street vendors unless you're certain of the water source.

How many tourists visit Phnom Penh each year?

Phnom Penh receives approximately 2 million international tourists annually. This figure can vary year by year due to global travel trends and local events. The city attracts visitors with its historical sites, such as the Royal Palace and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Peak tourist season typically occurs from November to February, when the weather is cooler and drier.

Why Siem Reap is better than Phnom Penh?

Siem Reap is often preferred for its proximity to Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which attracts visitors interested in historical sites and ancient temples. The city offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling capital of Phnom Penh. Siem Reap features a variety of accommodations, from budget hostels to luxury resorts, and a vibrant nightlife centered around Pub Street.

Transportation within Siem Reap is convenient, with tuk-tuks being a popular and affordable option (approximately 10,000 KHR or $2.50 for short rides). Dining options range from local Khmer cuisine to international dishes, with meals typically costing between 15,000-40,000 KHR ($3.75-$10).

While Phnom Penh offers cultural experiences like the Royal Palace and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Siem Reap's focus on ancient history and laid-back charm makes it a unique destination for travelers. Tap water is not safe to drink in Siem Reap, so bottled water is recommended.

Things to remember: Note that some of the airlines may have restrictions on checked luggage weight or require paying extra for check-in, choosing seats or transportation of oversized luggage.
