Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville Destination Reviews

I initially booked a 35 seater, because i had very bad experiences in palawan, so i wanted to avoid sitting in a small van stuffed with people and luggage. When i arrived at the office they told me they rebooked me to a van, so at first i was not happy about this. But it turned out to be a very spacious van with just 5 people, so I had a very pleasant ride with a very friendly driver.

The bus and the service was very good. Problem was that the journey time said it would arrive at 1.15pm, but it didn't arrive until after 2pm - and there were no obvious hold ups, so I guess the booking / journey time information was wrong

We had a very comfortable bus with a driver and a conductor. The bus also had wi-fi and left on time. However, due to a longer, not so necessary break, the bus arrived a little late which made it very difficult for some passengers to catch their ferry. Also the conductor was eager to help with purchasing ferry tickets and chose the company offering the next trip to our destination, but we rather would have wanted to choose between the different ferry operators.

The driver went to a different location for pick up even though I had both written our address clearly in my order, and told him over the phone. So we had to wait 30 minutes since he had to drive from the other side of the city. It was only after someone at the hotel told him in Khmer the location several times that he accepted he was in the wrong part of the city. Once in Sihanoukville he took us to the ferry even though I had specified in my order that we were going to a hotel. When I told him he asked me for directions so I had to direct him through Google Maps on my phone. Also while driving he was watching reels and news on his phone the whole time.

They combined the 9 and 10 am departure. So we had to wait for others to come on and the 10am passengers were rushed. We found out as we talked to each other on the bus. No great communication. Got there late. For the 9am departure it was not “express” Got the voucher after departure

Train

Train is a often a great choice for long-haul travel especially if you opt for a night sleeper train with berths which will allow you to sleep all your journey through. To make the most of your train journey, choose the class of your ticket wisely.

Note that there are air-conditioned and fan-only carriages; private compartments for 2 or 4; hard and soft seats.
Though the upper class you get the smoother is your journey, often second class air-conditioned or fan-only sleepers are a good money saving alternative.

Van

Vans are a great alternative - or, in many cases - your only option - if you need to travel overland within one and the same province or neighbouring provinces or states. Vans ply the roads between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, too.

Things to remember: When travelling by van with huge luggage buying a separate seat for your suitcase or backpack is a good idea. Do not expect there is a roomy luggage compartment in a van - there is actually none and your fellow passengers are unlikely to appreciate your luggage stuck under their feet, alas.
