Luang Prabang to Vientiane Destination Reviews

AA

An over-full minivan: drivers wait for too many people than seats and seatbelts before going :-( that is not comfortable for the price but most important: this is not safe for people. We were also 30' late?

Communication with 12go was horrible - we received ticket confirmation less than 2 hours before departure, which is awful. We barely received any responses from 12Go, and when we did, it was a robotic response. at one stage, we were told we had no tickets left, and then 20 minutes later we received an automated confirmation with tickets. How bizarre! Furthermore, it needs to be clearer that the booking confirmation takes 2 days to process, it's not acceptable to make that clear once someone has handed over their hard earned money.

So many potholes that it was very bumpy however the driver did a great job of getting us through it safely.

There was a driver+ 25 passengers (incl. 4 toddlers) in a van!! Even the local people were not satisfied. There were of course not seat belts for anyone. The driver drove dangerously. The trip took 10hrs. Luckily co-passengers were very nice and friendly.

There were too many Chinese passengers, who were very unfriendly and constantly jostled when boarding.

Booked a 14 seater minivan to leave at 7:30 am, was told there was no bus at 7:30 but was leaving at 8:30. Had a flight to catch leaving us worried we would miss it. There was 20 people on a 14 seater minivan so be prepared for cramped conditions in hot weather so wasn’t pleasant. On the positive side it only took 7 hours not the 10 specified so caught the flight on time. Great service from 12go though. Easy service booking the tickets and great communication. Got us from A to B

Would have preferred just to have train tickets organised and make own way to the station rather than take the transfer.

Company rejected giving any sort of children discount (for 3 kids) for train tickets, despite that kids under 120cm are free of charge and otherwise are 1/2 price, we were still charged full adult prices when going via the Agency.

What mode of transportation is the best one for my route?

Flights

Flying is the fastest and often the most expensive way to travel from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, but with a bit of luck you can score very good deals for as little as USD 78.29.

Things to remember: Note that some of the airlines may have restrictions on checked luggage weight or require paying extra for check-in, choosing seats or transportation of oversized luggage.

If opting for a flight, calculate the time you will spend getting to and from the airports as well as the waiting time before your flight, getting through immigration in case of an international flight and recovering your checked luggage.

In certain cases all these procedures can add no less than 5 hours to your total travel time.

Train

Train is a often a great choice for long-haul travel especially if you opt for a night sleeper train with berths which will allow you to sleep all your journey through. To make the most of your train journey, choose the class of your ticket wisely.

Note that there are air-conditioned and fan-only carriages; private compartments for 2 or 4; hard and soft seats.
Though the upper class you get the smoother is your journey, often second class air-conditioned or fan-only sleepers are a good money saving alternative.

Van

Vans are a great alternative - or, in many cases - your only option - if you need to travel overland within one and the same province or neighbouring provinces or states. Vans ply the roads between Luang Prabang and Vientiane, too.

Things to remember: When travelling by van with huge luggage buying a separate seat for your suitcase or backpack is a good idea. Do not expect there is a roomy luggage compartment in a van - there is actually none and your fellow passengers are unlikely to appreciate your luggage stuck under their feet, alas.
