Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh Destination Reviews

The staff member at the Cambodian border overcharged me for the B Visa I requested then did not allow me to accompany him to the officer. When he returned my passport with the Visa card. Full page that they no Longer use, he confirmed it was a Business Visa but he lied to me, it was the cheaper tourist visa. He demanded $44, but the cost of a tourist visa is $30. Now I have a serious problem because you can’t extend a tourist visa which will require me to exit the country in 30 days rather than extend for 1 year which will cost me several $100 dollars. He was rude, lied to my face and a very poor representative of Meko Limo

There was poor communication from the company from the beginning. I did not receive any messages or email from them. You would expect a company that does border passings to send you information regarding what to bring, what the process will be like, etc. Luckily I had done my research and got cash out for the visa. However, the person running the bus made me pay him 1,250,000 VND for the visa, however the visa is $30 USD (787,000 VND). Even with the “exchange rate” he was claiming, it should not have been more than 1,000,000 VND. There was also very poor communication of what was happening (like taking my passport and not giving it back - I had no idea that would happen or if it was supposed to happen), where we were when we stopped, how long we would be there, etc. I recognize that English is not their native language, however, I (and the other English speakers) would have appreciated some sort of information via Google Translate, which other companies always provide, especially when doing something like going to a new country. Overall, it was a very hectic experience and very poor communication from beginning to end.

It was literally just me on the bus (he said it was the first time that had happened) so the guy who spoke english literally did all of the immigration and visa things for me so I could just walk through. They all exchanged dong to usd for me at a good exchange rate, and gave me water and a pastry. We ended up arriving over an hour early, I assume because it was just me so no queues for immigration.

What are the special days in Phnom Penh?

Key special days include:

  • Khmer New Year: Celebrated in mid-April, marking the end of the harvest season. Families gather for traditional games and ceremonies.
  • Pchum Ben: A 15-day Buddhist festival occurring in September or October, honoring ancestors with offerings at pagodas.
  • Independence Day: Held on November 9th, commemorating Cambodia's independence from France in 1953, featuring parades and fireworks.
