Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur Destination Reviews

The bus left more or less on time; we drove around the corner and stopped. There we stayed for the next hour and a half! We were told that the bus had engine problems, and therefore needed replacing, but in fact it was another bus which transferred its passengers onto our bus. We arrived in KL two and a half hours late. I wish I'd taken the train.

1) The driver was smoking twice while driving 2) The driver offered free ride to people whom seemingly didn’t pay Not sure the above are legal

It's still necessary in 2026 to print the voucher and to pick up your ticket at the counter even when you already payed online. Why is not possible to receive a QR Code or something else and get your ticket immediatly per Mail? Additionaly we arrived 2 hrs late at our destination and the bus was not really clean. The curtains on my window where covered with something that looked like tomato sauce.

the travel and bus was completely fine, but the location for pick up was poorly described, the map location was the empty jasmine office, the address was a 15 minute walk for the actual location in the middle of nowhere and the actual place wasn’t on my ticket and in the ferry/bus terminal. All information concerning the pick up location was contradictory. Travel was good though, simple and decent bus

There was an hour delay and the last part of the trip was very uncomfortable. The bus seemed old and I think there was an issue with the engine since it jerked back and forth the whole time. At one point it even felt like we were not moving at all on the highway (we continuously moved forward and then stopt abruptly).

Overall, everything went well. We had two stops on our trip. The busdriver went out without telling us how long we gonna pause here and whether there is the option to go on toilet. Just the bus driver was very egoistic and took that opportunity. Everyone else stayed in the bus because of the fear to be left behind.

Train

Train is a often a great choice for long-haul travel especially if you opt for a night sleeper train with berths which will allow you to sleep all your journey through. To make the most of your train journey, choose the class of your ticket wisely.

Note that there are air-conditioned and fan-only carriages; private compartments for 2 or 4; hard and soft seats.
Though the upper class you get the smoother is your journey, often second class air-conditioned or fan-only sleepers are a good money saving alternative.

Van

Vans are a great alternative - or, in many cases - your only option - if you need to travel overland within one and the same province or neighbouring provinces or states. Vans ply the roads between Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur, too.

Things to remember: When travelling by van with huge luggage buying a separate seat for your suitcase or backpack is a good idea. Do not expect there is a roomy luggage compartment in a van - there is actually none and your fellow passengers are unlikely to appreciate your luggage stuck under their feet, alas.
