BOT senior director Paiboon Kittisrikangwan told media sources the new bill is the 16th version and will replace the current one which has been in circulation for the past nine years. The director added that the bills incorporated images of 18th century Thai monarch Taksin the Great.
The design of the note features the finest modern technology can offer. The Thai digits on the note representing 100 have a semi-transparent watermark and a shiny pattern that shows up when the notes are tilted under rays of light. Script on the bills has been designed so that blind people can touch-read it.
The BOT says the new THB100 is the same size and approximate red colour as the old one. The bank also says the more than 100 billion old notes still in circulation remain legal tender and can be exchanged at any bank branch in Thailand.
