The new fuel charges that will apply to the two carriers’ flights will be US$31 to Southeast Asian destinations and US$103 to locations outside the region. For premium business class seats the surcharges are US$45 and US$116 respectively.
The reduction is only US$5 for Southeast Asian economy tickets. The statement said the surcharge reductions were a reflection of the falling global price of jet-fuel over the past several months, but did add that the cost of fuel was still a significant proportion of total operational expenditure.
Many airlines have not reaped the benefits of the falling cost of oil as they committed to buying it at rates set when the price was still high in the middle of last year. Some of these carriers are tied to contracts which mean they will be purchasing oil at higher than market prices per barrel for the next few months.

News in AsiaSingapore Airlines has released a statement saying it will reduce the fuel surcharges passengers pay when they buy tickets for travel. The carrier says the reduced fuel fees will be effective 26 February 2015 and will also apply to its subsidiary SilkAir.
