Luang Prabang and Bagan bag travel awards

Awards announced in a leading UK travel magazine have placed two Southeast Asian towns as the best places to visit in 2015. Laos’s UNESCO listed Luang Prabang came in first and was closely followed by Myanmar’s temple city of Bagan.

Wanderlust Travel Magazine quizzes readers on various aspects of travel to compile shortlists for the awards. Under Wanderlusts’ criteria, Luang Prabang bagged a 97 per cent score in reader’s recommendation as the best city in the world to visit. Bagan scored 95 per cent in the surveys for the same category. Bagan scooped the winning award in 2014.

TV presenter Julia Bradbury announced the winners of the Wanderlust awards at a travel show staged in London at the end of last month. Myanmar came ninth in the category of best country to visit. Other categories in the awards include best airport, best airline and best UK destination.

Luang Prabang is in northern Laos and is a former royal capital famed for its beautiful temples and relaxing ambience. Bagan is close to Mandalay and boasts a fabulous collection of more than 2,000 temples and religious monuments which date from the 12th century.
